How much to spend on a wedding gift?
Permalink Closed

Okay, I am so lame when it comes to wedding etiquette. I'm a bridesmaid in my friends wedding and I have no idea how much I should be spending on her gift. I'm sort of broke right now, so I was thinking $50 - but is that way too little?

A couple of things here. First of all, if you're in the wedding chances are you are pretty close with the bride so, think of it from her shoes. (1) She knows you've got to fork out moolah for the dress, hair, etc. (2) She probably isn't going to be worried about the dollar amount you spend on the gift as much as the thought you put into it. Also, etiquette says you have up to a year to purchase the wedding gift. Hope this helps! Have fun :)

My best friend didn't give us an actual gift. Her gift to us was paying for her and her 2 daughter's (jr. bridesmaid and flowergirl) dresses, hair, makeup, etc. She also participated in making my shower. To me, that was enough of a gift.

In my opinion, give what you can and don't stress over it. A friend will not expect more than that from you.

I completely agree - do what you can, no more. If she is really a friend she won't think a thing about the price of your gift - particularly given the expense of the wedding.

(this from someone who got kicked out of a wedding because as a bridesmaid I didn't perform as I was told - ie, didn't bring presents to the right events - she had 7 in total & told me which things I should bring a gift to).

I agree with the others... just give your friend something you think she and her new hubs will like that's within your budget.  There are plenty of wonderful/thoughtful/beautiful/practical gifts out there for $50 or less.  Gift certificates always work, too.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone!

I ended up getting her this awesome looking throw blanket for the couch. I thought I'd get left with slim pickings because I looked at the registery so late, so i was happy when I saw this. I also just like the idea of giving someone a blanket. My boyfriend and I always cuddle up together on the couch in our throw blanket. Hopefully, she'll do the same :)

The best part was it was $49.99...within budget!
