My friend asked me to be a reader at her wedding in June. I have absolutely no idea what that really means.....do I pick the passage or does she? If I pick the passage, does it have to be religious themed? I am very very nonreligious (I *think* my friend is too) so I am not sure I would be comfortable reading something very religious.....
Also, my mother said that I am supposed to wear a dress the same color as the wedding party. Is that true?
I feel weird asking her all these questions b/c I feel like a dumba**........
there's nothing dumb about your questions...not at all!
most likely she will pick the passage. depending on her views, and whether she's getting married in a church and what their rules are...or not...it could be religious or non-religious. even if her ceremony is non-religious a lot of people like certain Bible passages, like the famous "love is patient, love is kind" one and choose those anyway. if you truly are uncomfortable reading something religious or otherwise you should probably talk to her sooner than later, or be prepared to do it anyway cause you love your friend. whatever the passage she chooses, she should give it to you so you have enough time (a week at the least) to read over it a few times, not that you need to memorize it or anything, but just so you can practice and make sure there aren't any words you don't know how to pronounce, etc.
as for what to wear, I would be surprised if she specified what you are to wear, but there's not much I wouldn't put past a bride...they can get kind of crazy sometimes (ask my new hubby ). you can definitely ask her if she has a preference, and if not, you could at least ask what her colors are so you can coordinate. i wouldn't feel any pressure to wear the same color as the attendants, and in fact, probably wouldn't even try to match shades, etc. i would say though, that I did find it sweet and thoughtful that some people involved in my wedding (and just plain old guests) actually tried to coordinate their clothes. maybe you could wear a dress in her second color from what her bridesmaids are wearing, or just a color that's complimentary...
anyway, sorry for my lengthy response...i have wedding planning withdrawal sometimes. plus i've been sequestered in my apartment studying for the GRE...i miss talking to people...hah.
Thanks so much Valenciana! This friend is my super corporate successful friend, and I wasn't sure if I was supposed to know this kind of stuff. I have been to plenty of weddings, but I never really paid attention to the reader....bad, I know - but I am a crier at weddings so I spend lots of time trying not to get mascara to run down my face.
