Please help! Accepting credit cards
Permalink Closed

Am I a jerk? I listed a pair of shoes on eBay, saying that I accept payment via Paypal.  A buyer won the shoes and tried to pay me via Paypal, but using a credit card instead of a bank transfer.  EBay never told me anything about any options regarding this when I registered as a seller.

Paypal tells me that I either need to upgrade to a "Premier Account" so that they can charge me a percentage and I can accept a credit card payment, or I have to deny the buyer's payment.

What do I do? Are you guys "Premier Members" that accept credit cards? Or if not, is there some way of mentioning that in the auction so that buyers will know up front?

i don't think i am a premier member, but i can accept credit cards. is there a fee associated with becoming a premier member?

they definitely charge me a percentage when someone uses their credit card to pay instead of their bank account, but i don't think it's really a big deal...

maybe email the winning bidder and ask if they can instead use their bank account to pay through paypal?

Hi bumblebee,

I am a "premier member" and I accept credit cards on my the stuff I sell - mostly for convenience and to encourage people to pay, since I think it's the easiest, quickest option for when I buy stuff from other people.

Anyway, to answer your other questions, I've seen people who accept PayPal with bank transfers only, but they do state that explicitly in the listing.  I'm not sure how you do it, or even if it's an option to choose.  You may have to state it manually in your listing text.

In your case, I think it may be best to become a premier member this once and accept this buyer's payment, since it wasn't clear what kind of PayPal you accepted.  Then next time, if you'd prefer to not be charged a fee for accepting credit card payments, you could go back to just doing PayPal bank transfers?  Hope this helps!

ETA: I don't think there is a fee to be a premier member, it just allows you to accept cc's, and they deduct a small fee everytime there is a transaction

phew--i e-mailed the buyer and asked her to pay w/bank account instead, which she did right away.  i was lucky on this one, that she was so nice and understanding.

so i guess i will just sign up for the premier membership for the next time, and then i won't have to worry.  thanks, ladies.
