Super basic question that I apparantly never learned the answer to

I guess I wear them more for layering. I'm guessing you're talking about a beater?

I have white tanks that are of a thicker material where nothing shows through.

White beaters are too thin to wear on their own, I agree. I have thicker white tanks I wear alone or with a cardi, and thinner ones I layer with a colored tank or with a second white tank.

Exactly. I have to do the same thing with white t-shirts too. You have to check for thickness of the top if you want to wear it on it's own.

yeah, I also wear them for layers. Usually with white bra, but sometimes, depends on the bottom - black bra.

If you can find a nude cami that is cut small enough to fit underneath the tank, then that's another option. I wear my white ones with a nude bra and don't have trouble with it.

I personally wear them all the time. I usually do a nude bra or black bra underneath (when I don't care if it shows.) Like the other girls, sometimes I will layer two tanks for added coverage if they are thin (maybe even layering a different color that will peek out underneath, like grey, or army green.)

I would never wear a white bra as they are very tough to blend in under clothes. Better to find one that matches your skin tone if you don't want your bra to show.

^ What she said. Honestly (a) very few white shirts are completely opaque, even wovens, and (b) I don't think it's such a big deal. We all wear undergarments under our garments.

Thanks for all the responses everyone, sorry I didn't respond earlier, but I haven't had a chance to get online before now! I think I'll try to find a nude cami. I just feel weird when I can see the line between my jeans and the tank. I'm always paranoid everyone can see my fat rolls (that I'm currently trying to get rid of via CrossFit)...
