Is it a go in real life, or only if you are Heidi Klum on a runway? I can't decide. I have a ivory/black striped shirt and an ivory/black polka dot skirt. I think it looks cute together, but maybe I am suffering from exhaustion and can not make a rational decision. ;) What are your thoughts on mixing patterns?
I really like doing it - I think it can add interest to an outfit without necessarily introducing a bunch of colors to the mix.
I think it looks best when you have one 'main' pattern - the one that's the largest, or loudest, and then another supporting pattern, that's more subtle and/or smaller in scale. Texture can count as a pattern too, perhaps the most subtle of all. Breaking it up with other solid items helps too - you could pair your striped shirt and polka dot skirt with a wide black belt and a solid grey or beige cardigan to quiet the mix of prints if it feels a little out there. I'd probably wear a bright or otherwise completely unexpected shoe with an ensemble like that because I like the sort of offhand/offbeat feel, but you could also add another texture with your shoe and keep it more neutral.

Elle pretty much nailed it in her explanation. I think mixing patterns when done right can really make an outfit look fresh and modern. I think you accomplished that.
A denim jacket and wide red belt would help because it would tone down the stripes. For me it's a pass. I think the patterns are both too bold. I love the pieces individually though.
