I know Gap and ON's return policy is 45 days, but what if you try to return something after 45 days? I ordered some jeans from gap and a tank from ON and just haven't gotten around to returning them... Now it's been 47 days since I placed my order. Will they let me return or will I have to keep the merch?

I would go to the store to return them. It seems like when you are in person the sales associates are a bit more willing to bend the rules. Whereas if you return it through the mail they aren't as willing. I am always willing to compromise and take store credit in these instances, I figure if they think the money is staying within the company, they will accomodate me.
I think ON just recently tightened up their return policy, down to 30 days from 45. That very well may be just for straight returns though - I doubt you'd have trouble getting store credit.

proved by experience: go to the store, ask VERY nicely, they might overlook the date or give you a store credit maybe, something...try, but BE VERY NICE.
I am a Gap employee. While managers and employees are super flexible and will do the best they can, the online store is entirely separate from our system, and we can make no exceptions to it. This is also why we have to process all online returns separate from in store transactions. They will likely state this first, however if you go on a non busy day, they may volunteer to call on your behalf and try to argue your case and have the money refunded or something, but I am not sure on that...and it will likely take a while (as we have to go through the same automated system as everyone placing phone orders does...).
I hope that made sense...

Thanks penguininaboat! I've decided to just keep the stuff - it's only two things. The jeans are a little small, but it's good motivation to lose weight. The tank was about $10, so I can just donate it.

Interesting. It's been a few years but DH used to buy a style of Gap jean that was "online only," among other stuff from Gap, and they would take them back in the stores no problem. Old Navy too.
We take back online stuff no problem, but you get 45 days until the system starts rejecting it. 15 days for shipping and 30 per our normal return policy.
