Style this dress for three different weddings
Permalink Closed

Here's the deal: I've got three weddings coming up with three different levels of formality. Ideally, I would like to wear the same dress to all three, and probably will seeing as the two weddings with the same group of friends will be far enough apart that nobody should remember. And I've verified with all three brides that it would be okay to wear this color. Since it's such a vibrant color, I wasn't sure about it.

1. A less formal afternoon wedding, April in Philadelphia.
2. A very formal late afternoon wedding, London in June. And by very formal, I mean, the older generation of women will be wearing hats and it's in a very fancy church and the reception will be held at an extremely posh venue.
3. A somewhat formal wedding, West Chester, New York in late September. I don't know what time of day this wedding is yet.

I am hoping to wear this dress. My questions are about a covering as I presume that both the April wedding and the June wedding might require something to cover my shoulders. Especially the London one as I have been informed that bare shoulders in the church are not appropriate. What about jewelry? I don't have my ears pierced so I can't go in that direction but can I wear a necklace with the dress?

Thanks, ladies! If anybody else has seen a dress that they think might be okay for all three weddings, feel free to post as well!

Here's one I thought of, maybe for the less formal wedding.

Pretty color on the dress! I think you can probably use it for all three weddings by mixing up the add ons and shoes. My only questions is if the material fancy enough for the London wedding? I can't tell what it's made from.

For Wedding #1 (afternoon wedding)

I would have some fun with my shoes and accessories for this one.

For Wedding #2

I would do a light sweater or pashmina.  Easy to pack and you can use it for some other event while in London.

I would err on the side of conservatism in my shoes.  Think classic.

I think a gold cuff or a great cocktail ring would be great

For Wedding #3 (semi formal in Fall)  I would switch up by using a belt

21398_BK0001.tif&tmp=prdAr3 I think this would look pretty and fun.

And go with classic black pumps

And keep the accessories in the same darker pallet.

And I think if you keep the clutch simple you should be able to use it for all three weddings.

Some alternative dress options, because, why not?!

Adriana Papell, $89, comes in purple and raspberry as well.  Many sizes still available.  This dress is silk which would be appropriate all around IMO, but the cutouts allow it to be a little more playful and easier dressed down for the less formal weddings.

A couple other Anthro options:
033027_041_b?$redesign-quickviewMain$You could go with more neutral accessories/shoes with this for the more formal wedding, and then do coral or fuschia for the less formal ones.

033011_005_b?$redesign-quickviewMain$This would be gorgeous with silver shoes/accessories, but you could also swap out or add a beautifully colored satin or velvet ribbon to the waist (maybe like a deep forest green?) to change up the look a little.

For the dress you posted, I'd find a nice printed scarf/wrap that you like and wear that as your main 'accessory', and just do a nice low sandal in nude or a color that's in the print of the scarf.

For the formal wedding, I'd do a dove grey wrap as your shoulder covering, and then do a pewter or silver slingback or peeptoe pump.  Not sure if you're supposed to wear hose of some kind to fancy British wedding though?

Thanks ladies, this is really helping me figure out what to do. Elle, that green dress you posted is really pretty, I may have to see if I can try that on. I haven't worn a dress in about three-thousand years so have no clue what size I am.

And lordie...I think I do probably have to wear hose to the fancy London wedding. If it wasn't the fact that I'll be staying with the bride's parents and thus only have to pay for the flight, this London trip would be a nightmare.

I really love the leopard shoe idea for the first wedding and black patent/sparkly accessories for the third. I don't know if it's right for the London wedding though. The fabric looks like a textured knit (?) which wouldn't be dressy enough IMO.

And oh hai, I don't have pierced ears either. I almost never meet other adult women with virgin earlobes! This is kind of exciting for me.

I tried that red dress on in December and did not like the fit. Have you tried it yet or where you planning on ordering it? Just wanted to give a heads up. I like the last dress Elle posted and have been eyeing it but I haven't tried it on yet.

The reviews on Anthro all said that this is a "try-it-on" dress because of the placement of the waist. I've got All Day Shopping scheduled for next weekend and I'm hoping to try it on then. Thanks for the tip on the fit!

Ohhh, sorry to ruin the excitement but my ears are technically second-generation virgins. :) I haven't worn earrings since the eight grade so, not quite a virgin, but my ear-hymens have definitely grown back.

I am worried about the texture of the dress but we'll see. I just really, really want to get that dress since it's such a vibrant red.

So, yep. The red dress wasn't a great fit. The waist was fine but the neckline was weird. The whole top part of the dress made me feel like it was on backwards and that's not a good feeling.

Back to square zero, I guess.
