Spanx ... what is the diff?
Permalink Closed

I'm on what might be my 10th pair of Spanx "higher power" underwear and fed up at this point.  I do like the way they tend to suck in a tummy and smooth in al the right places for certain outfits.  I don't like the way that the pantyhose material "runs" and how the top loses elasticity and rolls down after 3 wears.

Is it worth it to buy a more expensive version of the same thing?  What is the diff between these below?  How about Assets, the brand sold at Target?  I've tried their version of higher power and was not impressed, but what about their shapewear?  Please chime in if anyone has an experience with the varying shapeware below.

Higher Power $36 - the loser

Hide & Sleek Hi-Rise Body Smoother $68 to $72 - worth 2x the price?

Slim Cognito Seamless Mid-Thigh Bodysuit $72 to $76 - extra $4 for bra straps?

Fantastic Firmers High Waist Girl Short $26 - how can it be so cheap???

If you're washing in between each wearing, make sure that you are taking appropriate care for elastic/lingerie material (which I'm sure you are anyway).

If you aren't washing in between each wearing, maybe it would help to drop the piece into very cold water to contract the elastic back.  I don't know if it would really work, but it might help.  That way, you get the contraction that you want without having to put it through potentially damaging detergent, water, and agitation.

Don't wear it two or more days in a row?

With regard to the running, that bites.  I don't know what to suggest for that.

Are there any reviews on the other models, on any sites?

I bought a Barely There shaper at Bare Necessities and find it comparable to the spanx power panty. I think it was about half the price and then on sale.

I second what pollyjean said - I haven't tried Spanx specifically but I would assume you are supposed to wash them the same as any other shapewear, with a lingerie/elastic wash in cold water and then hang to dry.

Other than that sorry I don't know the difference :(

thanks for the input guys -

I do wash cold (after each wearing) but I will admit there are times that I put them in the dryer.

I guess I'll look around for more options. I don't need much "support" but I do like the way they smooth everything in snug dresses. I'll persue other options.

Maybe you can get several less expensive ones.  And, while you're trying them out (benefit), you'll also experience the luxury of having a bunch that you can rotate and not feel like you have to wash every time.  I know when I do that, I'm less likely to rush and do bad things to my lingerie.  smile.gif

I bet if you keep them out of the dryer you will have less problems with the elastic wearing out. Not that line drying solves your problem with runs...

Oh and BTW I tried Assets a while ago and I didn't like them at all. I felt like they didn't do anything and they rolled. I don't remember what the name of the style I got was, but it went up to my bra band and halfway down my thighs.

I can't stand Spanx--they roll up and they roll down.  Once, on the way to a wedding in Chicago in a rental car I wrestled my body out of a pair of Spanx.  DH was understandably concerned--I was wearing a bias cut (but lined) dress.  I told him not to fret, I did have undies underneath, just in case.  I would have looked better with something under, but there is no way I could have put up with them all evening.

I bought a Donna Karan body shaper for a different dress a few months later.  The first time I put them on it took forever, but after that they slid on easily.  They cost at least twice as much as the Spanx but were well worth it.  I don't understand the reputation for Spanx, unless women are using it as a generic term for body shaper.  I do buy Spanx trouser socks and they are fine.

the body smoother is a thicker fabric (if thats the one I have)... I find it to be more uncomfortable than the higher power, but it doesn't run. That target line is worthless when it comes to the higher power style shapewear (loses its shape, hems fall out), but I do really like the tights and they hold up well.
