i've been meaning to start selling on ebay for a long time now, but have never gotten around to it. i finally have a digital camera and will soon have lots of free time on my hands after leaving my job in two weeks, so it seems like a good time to start. i've read through some posts here and found a lot of helpful information from everyone about setting your minimum bid, shipping things, etc., but wanted to see if anyone had tips for someone just starting out. since i'm new i won't have any ratings or feedback -- will that make buyers more reluctant to place bids? is there anything i need to know to make people more comfortable buying from me? and should i be concerned about people not paying, or is that impossible?
I'm a new ebayer too so I don't have any advice for you. I have been selling books and cds on half.com for many years and that is a good way to boost up your rating/feedback for ebay.
Yep that's my doggie! I'm sure you've done this but I'll mention it in case you haven't. Check out some of the listings people here do on ebay and maybe you can pick up the phrases they use and similar things so you can figure out the best way to list stuff and the best way to attract bidders.
i agree with lsubatgirl...you can do like a regular search, but on the left side is a box for completed items, so let's say you're selling a gucci handbag. you type that into search, but click the completed items box, it will show how much gucci handbags sold for. so for the ones that sell the best, i would look to see what those sellers wrote in their description. i hope that makes sense.
also, i heard that ending the auction on sunday night is best because that's when the most people are on the computer (i don't remember where i read this..) i always start/end mine at 7pm Pacific Time Zone...cuz on the East Coast people are still probably awake, and at 7pm people are maybe home from work on the West Coast.

you could buy a few inexpensive things that you use anyway or things to get you started on ebay to boast your ebay rating. ....this is what i did. at least 5-10 ratings or so. I think we have 360 feedbacks now....mostly from selling and not everyone leaves you feedback. But a score around 10 should get you started and you will be amazed at how quick the feedbacks come in.
ideas for ebay buying to use selling ebay---pricing gun, cheap mannequin if you are going to be selling cloths, bubble wrap, bubble envlopes, a book about selling ebay
or just some things for yourself --- cheap jewelry, shampoo, razors for husband, humidifyer refills, dry shampoo, new makeup brushes, scarves, cufflinks....(these are some of the things i buy for us)
