I got into a debate with a friend about the "rules" for seasonal clothing. We live around Washington, DC. My friend is under the impression that tank tops and "summery" short sleeve shirts are only allowed *precisely* from Memorial Day until Labor Day, and that until Memorial Day, people shouldn't wear them.
My response was that if it's in the 80s, a tank top or bright color are perfectly okay. (This debate wasn't about work clothes). She countered that in an area with a distinct Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall, there are rules. She also said that white /off white pants and skirts are not supposed to be work before Memorial Day, regardless of temperature. I noticed a lot of women wearing these things before Memorial Day if it was hot outside. Have these "rules" of fashion ceased to exist, having been replaced with a "if it's warm enough, wear it" attitude, or is my friend right? I consider it perfectly appropriate to wear "summery" tops if it's warm, even if it isn't "technically" summer.
I am in the 'rules are meant to be broken' camp, especially when it comes to fashion. If it's appropriate for the weather and situation, WEAR IT! Rules be damned!

I too have adopted the "if it's warm enough, wear it" attitude. I am all for breaking seasonal rules...they feel so restrictive and it's not like I can ever remember any of them anyway.
I absolutely do not agree with your friends take on the fashion rules.
I do make and have my own little personal rules, but they weren't taken from anywhere but my head. The list includes:
1.) If I bought it in that season I will probably only wear it in that season (which is why I can't buy sale stuff out of season -it's a wierd tick, I know) 2.) No winter fabric in warm weather (stuff like velvet, flannel, dark plaids and greys) 3.) no linen after September 4.) no pastels or other "spring colors" from September thru February 5.) No "fall colors" from New Years thru August 6.) No boots of any kind from April or May thru September 7.) No sandals from November thru March/April unless its a decidely out-of-season summery day (that might happen once a year)
I don't know where I got these rules, but I noticed in the last few years that I follow them.
I think that appropriateness usually depends more on fabric/style than color. White wool pants are definitely ok for winter, linen ones are not but I think lighter fabrics (cotton) can be worn on exceptionally nice days. Summer fabric white pants are ok as soon as it's warm enough to wear them; there's no reason not to wear them before Memorial day.
Most colors can be worn year round but there are some darker colors that I try to avoid during the spring/summer months. I totally agree with the guidelines that Drew posted regarding shoes and I have the same problem about buying/wearing things in the same season. I just can not buy a sweater April.
I say life's too short to worry about such restricting rules. You sound sensible enough about fashion; wear what you want and let your friend freak out about your timing if she's going to. *s*

well, I live in DC too and I've been wearing summery tops for two months now- some days are just too hot to be bundled up! I think as long as it *feels* like summer, dress for summer. If it's 80 degrees in March and you are wearing something winter-y you'll look just as silly as if it were 50 in July and you were wearing a tank top and shorts.

I am the same way regarding #1. I know I could save alot of money if I shopped out of season, but I just can't. When Spring is here, I want to buy spring stuff, etc.
I thought all the "rules" were trashed during the '60's and '70's, but lately they seem to be back stronger than ever--especially the rule about no white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. I have read that this rule originally applied to upper class clubs in the Northeast and weren't applicable to the average folks.
Sometimes I look on a cruise critic fashion board and people are always asking if it okay to wear white in February in the Carribbean, or velvet in December in the tropics.
I say, common sense is the only rule that should be followed, but many people are very offended when others don't follow so-called fashion rules.
Yet, I'm the one who asked about black fishnets as office wear. LOL
I disagree with your friend too. If the weather is warm in March or April.. would you really force yourself to wear a wool sweater.. just because of what the calender says? I know I wouldn't.
There are certain dressing rules that i do follow (white shoes only between Memorial and Labor Day) because i prefer too. But your friend has gone overboard with her rules, winter white have always been acceptable and look great, and of course you can wear tanks and short sleaves in the spring before Memorial Day. A few things always look bad though, IMO, such as velvet in the summer, yuk! I think your friend needs to lighten up a little and have some fun with her clothes.
