layering necklaces?

I've been so impressed by Smash's conbinations of necklaces, that I started playing around with pairing some of my own. Is there a trick to it? Does a chunky one need to be paired with a thinner one? Can a couple thin ones go together? Do you have to keep checking in a mirror to make sure they don't look messy?

What pairs of necklaces do you wear together a lot?
