I just purged my wardrobe over the weekend. I am proud of the fact that--over the course of about a year--I have really made use of a larger portion of the clothes I have. If a piece of clothing fit, I tried wearing it at least once or twice in a unique way. Haven't bought a lot of new stuff. And, when I have made purchases, I tried to make sure they fit well and fit my style. Now, if I want to buy new things, I feel like it's more special and kind of a reward.
I love purging. I've read somewhere that it is a psychological thing, and it does make me feel better.
I still don't know what to do with the row of work clothes in my closet. Every time I decide to part with an item, I wear it one more time to say a fashion goodbye. Of course 15 people will stop me and say, I love that skirt! Where did you buy it? Bah.
I 'seriously' need to do an everything purge (clothes/shoes/jewelry/make-up), ALL THAT! LOL This just might be my motivation! I'm not sure I could do it all in one day, but I sure would TRY! I'd like to invite friends over to help, but I always end up doing it w/my mom! LOL If she can't fit it, it goes to her GF, or to my Godmother's grandaughters, so.... Recycle!

I guess I should say Congrats because I know that is quite the ordeal. I definitely need to do this...my boyfriend does too. Thanks for the inspiration.

I'd box them up or move them up and move them to an out-of-the-way spot if you're able. It's always good to have a few work-y items to call on just in case, but there's no reason they can't hang out under the bed until then! Yank them all out in a year, and try culling it then - I always find I feel less attached to my things if I haven't seen them for awhile.
Congrats Pollyjean! I always feel tons better after a closet purge, too.

I need to schedule a purge soon. Maybe next Friday night when I am home alone. I have 2 bags ready to go but I need to go through more stuff and really decide keep/toss/giveaway. We just have too much stuff. I need to make Mike do the same but he acts like everything is important and must be kept.
I'm also going to try to incorporate the flylady system in a bit more. She is a clean/declutter person. I figure it can only help. http://flylady.net/pages/FlightPlan.asp

My husband's ratty tatty clothing magically 'disappears' around here. I'm never quite sure how that happens . Honestly, he rarely notices, mostly because he wasn't wearing them anymore anyway!

Ah yes. We battle over the jeans that are now white from washing and wear and also have holes in them. He insists in keeping them to wear around the house. In the four years we've been together he has never put them on. I'm not going to discuss the abundance of t-shirts or items that are still in the plastic or box they came in (gifts we don't need or want).
I think I'll try your method of letting some things just "disappear" and see what happens.
I love purging - it is such a great feeling - I have a heap of clothes I piled in a spare room I need to give away to the right people (some for sis, some for mom, etc.)
I just purged for a garage sale last weekend - even sold a pair of barely worn cole haan sandals for $1. the rest of the stuff is going to salvation army. I also gave stuff away during the sale. It was fun making people's day by selling them new boots for $1.50, or just giving them things (some with tags on still.) as hard as it is to part with stuff sometimes, I find I rarely miss what I get rid of.
I'm also doing a major purge at home to make room for my mom's nicer stuff - she was an interior designer and has some beautiful furniture. big trip to a resale shop and Salvation Army planned for this weekend!

I think I have to admit to being a bit of a flip-flopper when it comes to this. Sometimes, I'm great...I've got everything organized and orderly and anything that doesn't quite fit or doesn't get worn hits the goodwill bag. Other times, like this year (major transitions)I can't let go of anything. I'm sad to admit that I even went back through the bag of things I had set aside to get rid of and pulled things back out again. :(
