I'm attending a gala on Saturday and the dress code is "Indian inspired". I think the theme is Night in Bombay. I was going to wear a regular dress but found out my two friends are dressing "inspired" after all. Has anyone seen a cute dress, preferably under $200, that I could pick up at a store either tomorrow or Sat? I live in the Chicago area so most stores are accessible. TIA!
UPDATE - got a dress!! Thanks shopgirl82 for suggesting that dress, and thanks to everyone else for their great ideas. I shouldn't have waited till the last minute I'll post photos after the party!

I know others will be wearing saris but I'm way too clumsy to try and figure out how to wear it properly. Not to mention a couple of people I know bought outfits from the Indian neighborhood and based on what they paid, I know I would want to spend at least $300. Not cheap... I don't mind paying that for a dress, but I wouldn't want to spend that much on something I would more than likely not wear again. Thanks though!

how dressy does it have to be? more formal or more stylish? I am boycotting doing any actual work today, so I'll look around online and see what I can find that you might be able to get at a B&M, but could you do something like a tunic/craftan and linen pants or would that be too casual?
this is on ebay and ends tonight...the seller is in Chicago so maybe you could send him/her an email and see if they would let you pick it up if you won? Current bid is around $11.
my picks from the only store i know (but i know that their clothes fit you well....since you shop there!!)
30% off right now. beautiful dress, i can't believe it went on sale. which would be close to $300.
50% off right now. which would be close to $200 including tax.
and finally....
and the green one is the one i immediately thought of, however, it's $380 AND it's hard to find smaller sizes (but there may be sizes at marshall fields, bloomie's etc. the pink i think is more available and is less than $300.
lastly, you could go to devon street (but from what you said about your friends buying items, that's probably where they went) hope that helps, i hope you don't like the last green dress because it might be hard to find by saturday.

I think ILoveChoos pick is a great one for this theme party. It has a beautiful pattern, it's cheap, it fits the theme, and I think you could work with it later too. Try contacting that Ebay seller and see if she/he can work with you.
I love that last dress, shopgirl; You are such a meanie for posting a difficult-to-get-item! ;)

i know. i was debating, but then i thought that it might be at one of the several marshall fields, bloomie's or nordstroms in chicago. it's just hard to find at the bcbg retail stores. shoot, am i going to have bad karma for the rest of the day?? (i'm going to the cubs game at 1:20 and i am now envisioning thunderstorms!!!

I'm indian, and if i were going to an india themed party and didn't want to wear a sari or a lengha, I think I would pick the pink bcbg dress or go the simple dress, exotic wrap and TONS of jewelry route. I'm sure you could go to the indian area and get a silk wrap, and also lots of jewelry- and indian inspired jewelry is hot right now so you could probably wear the earrings again. also, wear lots of think metallic bangles, you should be able to get them in all different colors, and just stack them on. i think most people wear about an inch or two of bangles these days...
here are some great examples of indian jewelry- i love this stuff! ( binny and thaya at girlshop)
and i would wear great metallic heels- don't you have those BCBG gold ones? (god im such a stalker!)
oooh, fun. i'm bengali (from bangladesh) and i second ritz's jewelry rec. there's so much of it right now and it can really make an outfit pop.
darn, too bad we don't live closer, i have a ton of saris and lenghas that i'm sure would look fabulous on you. but you're right about saris being a pain to put on, tbh my mom or someone always has to help me whenever i wear one.
Thanks everyone! Whew, it was a long day today and I'm just getting home. I rushed to BCBG and got this dress:
I LOVE the green one but they didn't have my size. Of course I bought a ton of other stuff that was on sale that I will post in the weekend shopping thread when I get around to it. In the meantime I realize I don't have proper shoes for the dress! I'd love these Choos:
but *sigh* first of all, they're super pricey. Second of all I don't feel like stressing about buying them in the fifteen free minutes I have between tonight and the party. So....I'm stopping by banana to see if they have these:
or hope Fields/Carsons carries these 9 west ones:
in this color: Has anyone seen any other silver strappy heels? The more bare the better :) What about accessories? I was thinking an armful of silver bangles but what else? I have a really cool silver arm band. If I wear the arm band should I wear bangles on the other arm or is that too much? How about earrings ? Any suggestions? Thanks so much ladies, you all rock!!

somehow i *felt* that you were going to get the pink one (the availability of it and the cut of it). i'm so glad it worked out. post the other things that you got too!
i think silver shoes would be perfect along with one arm cuff, no other bracelets.

Drew, I don't mind. I added a photo up on top. Not as ethnically inspired as others at the party but I was comfortable. There was such a range of dress at that party. Some girl was wearing a Cleopatra-type headress! A lot of guys were in seersucker suits. I think they secretly wanted to own one and all ran to Neimans to buy the same one, ha! Overall it was pretty fun.
