Thoughts on scarves?

I kinda dig this look, and I think I want to try it for myself.

I'm not normally a 'trendy' sort of person, so I really don't want to look like a fashion victim!  Anyone have any tips (and more pics!) for pulling this off?

I think the scarves are are cute idea.  Even though they are trendy, I think they will stay for awhile.  Your pictures are great examples.

I've been wearing scarves like that for a longggg time and I really love it- the pic on the right is a really nice look IMO, I like it a lot more than the left.

I think wearing scarves is pretty classic even though I know it's become trendy now. It's a fairly timeless trend, not like trying to pull off leggings or neon, but if you don't wear scarves often you may feel self-conscious, like you're trying to look trendy. I tend to wear an oversize v-neck T, long cardigan, jeans and ballet flats with scarves. If I'm wearing a square scarf I usually just fold it in half with the point pointing down in the middle and wrap the ends around my neck so that they dangle in the front next to the point. If I'm wearing a long rectangular scarf I usually wear it like your second pic and maybe tie it in a knot. I think proportion of the rest of your outfit just needs to be taken into account. It's fun to play with scarves, just loop them around your neck a different number of times, tie knots in different locations. I have one patterned silk scarf with tassels from Urban that I wear all the time, picking up different colors in the pattern in the rest of my outfit. I also have a Love Quotes scarf in a muted coral that I wear a ton in warmer weather. It's a really versatile color.

This is what I wear with scarves too, for the most part. Sometimes I'll wear a blazer/jacket instead of a cardigan, and sometimes I'll just wear a long-sleeved crew neck tee. I have a few Love Quotes scarves in fun colors that I love to wear-- they give an otherwise plain, neutral outfit some interest. I wear them like in your second pic... I wrap the scarf around my neck once and sometimes I'll tie a knot to make the ends shorter, depending on how the proportions look.

I love scarves, but the one thing that bugs me about this trend is seeing girls wearing tee shirts and wearing big clunky scarves. If it's cold enough to need a thick scarf, then you should be wearing more than a tee shirt. And vice versa, if it's hot enough that you can wear a tee shirt, then a thick scarf looks a bit silly and a thinner scarf is in order.

That's my two cents. smile.gif I do love scarves and I think they can be a fun, easy, and relatively inexpensive way to pull together an outfit and look more polished.

I especially like these Tolani scarves:

(I can't seem to post a pic for whatever reason.)

Exactly - I don't want to look like a weirdo who is trying too hard, like I neglected to remove a piece of outerwear!

I like how these girls look alot:

They have a full collection of Tolani scarves at Revolve as well.  Tolani used to have stuff at the leaping lotus in San Diego, but no longer (sad).

I know Alka (the owner), she is a sweetheart and all of her scarves are beautiful.  I met her when I was responsible for managing vendors for a charity shopping event.  We had lots of scarf vendors, and hers were by far the nicest (the most expensive too, but worth it).

I think it is a cute look but I'd look like an idiot trying to pull it off myself. That and my climate doesn't really lend itself to something like a scarf. We rarely need a jacket down here :(

I actually really like the look of scarves. I wear them when I feel like my outfit needs more print or is to boring overall. I do think its important though to wear the appropriate weight of the scarf to match the weather.

(light weight , silky = spring summer , wool & Jaquard or heavy = fall winter)

Love these examples.  I like scarves in general and having been wearing them for a few years now - long, short, heavy, light - makes no difference to me, I wear what my mood is wink

I was debating getting a scarf this weekend, but am having the same problem. I don't want to look like I'm trying too hard. Plus, do you think the look is OK if you have a larger chest? It felt kind of bulky on me when I tried one on in the store.

Where I live, 25% percent of people under the age of 22 are wearing a a thick-ish indoor scarf gathered around their neck similar to the picture on the left that Elle posted the first time. I totally love scarves, but to me that look just sort of screams out "trend" and somehow I'm not a huge fan. (Hope that doesn't offend anyone!) But I LOVE all the looks in the second set of pictures that Elle posted. They seem in on the trend but a little more unique to me.

I did some scarf shopping today, and tried lots of stuff on since I've never worn one before.  I'm petite and felt like the wide pashmina-style scarves were overwhelming to my frame - Target had an awesome acid green/yellow, but it was just toooooo much.  I found a narrower black one that I got, and also one that's black w/silver-ish threads through it that's more gauzy.  I think the key if you're short or chesty would be to get something in a thinner material so it lays nicely - go for it!

ETA - I might play around with them later this week and do some Threadstyle posts, we'll see ....
