picking my first frames!
Permalink Closed

okay, so i found out yesterday that i need glasses!  (see "should i get my eyes checked?" post in health and beauty)  i'm secretly excited because i think glasses are SO cute.  now i need to pick frames and i have no idea what i should look for!

i tried on several pairs after my eye exam and i really liked one particular pair, but they're pretty funky and i decided to think about it and go back with a friend sometime this week, probably saturday.  i really loved the place that i went.  the doctor was amazing and explained EVERYTHING to me and the staff was so fun- i want to buy my frames there because they were so nice to me.  they definitely had a lot of different styles- the overall vibe of the store is pretty funky.  (it's on haight street in san francisco, so you can imagine!)

does anyone have any tips?  i'm going to be wearing these glasses every day at work, so i want to make sure i end up with a good pair.  my office environment is casual, so i don't need to be too concerned with buying a "professional" looking pair.  should i play it safe or just go for a funky pair that flatters my face?  i definitely want something cute and "smart-sexy."  i'm excited because i consider glasses to be a fashion accessory!  i just want to make sure i get some that are versatile and cute.

any suggestions/tips would be great- thanks, girls!

I don't have glasses but I know what you mean by glasses being so cute.  I have always wanted a pair of cat eye glasses (I think that's their name). I ate too many carrots as a kid so I don't think I'll ever need them.

Hi sfcaligirl,

I wear glasses (although I didn't get them until about 2 years ago) and I was excited to get them, too! So, congrats! I ended up picking Armani frames that are a dark brown - slightly bronzy - and not too thick. Mine aren't a funky style because those pairs competed with my face.

What are your facial features like? I think people who have delicate face features (ie, not a bigger nose like mine) look best in the funky frames, while those who have stronger facial features should go with frames that are a little less strong. Also, if you wear a lot of big jewelry, like dangly earrings or chunky necklaces, keep in mind that glasses are just another accessory to add.

If the funky style looks good on you, then you've probably found a good match! Ultimately, go with whatever feels right when you look in the mirror, rather than trying to purposely seek out a "safe" pair or otherwise.

Anyway, hope I haven't rambled on too much -- HTH!

thanks, christine!  good advice.  you're right, i should go with whatever works best on my face.

i discovered yesterday that anything too round looks ridiculous on me because my face is a little round/oval.  all the frames that i liked were more square-ish.  i'm not sure how to describe my features.  my eyes and nose seem "normal" i guess- not delicate but not big either.  i do know that i have a bigger mouth and full lips- i hate wearing lipstick because my mouth tends to take over my face!  i think that stronger frames look better on me for that reason- to kind of balance my face, you know?

i do like to wear big earrings.  hmmm, that might look really weird with glasses... how can i make it work?  i don't want to stop wearing all of my beloved earrings!

Yes, I agree - if you have fuller lips and you steer clear of lipstick, I think getting a stronger frame would really look great and help balance your face, as you said. That's probably why the squarish frames looked right.

I think you can still pull off your big earrings with your glasses, just keep something else simple, like not wearing a necklace or keeping your hairstyle uncomplicated. I bet lots of those big earrings would look just right with your glasses. Maybe when you go to try the glasses on again, bring along a favorite pair of your earrings, and see how they look together?

Get the funky frames!  I think you will be disappointed if you don't.
