So after looking at everyone's weekly wardrobe things and stylediary, I decided to do a modified version of that just for myself. I realized I get so caught up with the new ideas and new things that I am not very good about inventing new ways to wear what I already have, which results in me spending more money than I can afford to (f/t student--interior design! and p/t corporate paralegal). So I've been taking pictures of all my items of clothing, and my idea is that if I have images of them all on my computer, I can sort of scroll through them more quickly than through my closet & drawers, and I'll be more aware of what I actually have. I also suspect that once I see the total number of files I will be ashamed of myself for thinking I have nothing to wear. So once I have an outfit I like, I can either take a picture of myself in it and save it, or photoshop the pieces into one image.
Oh and the other reason for doing it on the computer is that I started saving images I like, from stylediary or boutique web sites, so if I have the idea image right there and my own digital wardrobe right there, I can quickly figure out how I might translate it... or something like that. It's the digital version of my disorganized drifts of tear-outs from Lucky etc., that I save with the intention of putting them into neat binders in plastic sleeves, but never have the time.
It sounds like a great idea. I did something similar on a smaller scale - I doodled my items I do think this (and all the advice here and at at stylediary) helped me get more wear out of the cool things already in my closet! Good luck!
i catalog 90% of the items i own! it's a bit freakish, but i like having a "clueless" like inventory of what i own. sometimes things get lost in my closet, so this reminds me.
I think that is a great idea. Another thing you can do to is that when you paired together a really cool outfit take a picture of it and save it, so you know how you look in it, so when you are in a rush, you don't get frustrated that you have nothing to wear. I wish I would do this, I put together outfits that i really like and forget about what i paired together.
It's okay, I've done the same thing. I have pictures of all my items and I also save all the pictures I post under style thread. When I feel uninspired, I can just wear something cute I put together a while ago.
yeah yeah I was thinking of Clueless! My version is just slightly lower-tech... and slightly less comprehensive. ;) Virtual closet, huh? I would register except is says it has tools to show you how much you spend vs. how much you earn... I don't need to know EXACTLY how scary of a ratio that is!
I do this and it is great. When I am feeling inspired I create outfit ideas in a word document. Also I uploaded into shutterfly and was going to have anyone that is interested create outfits for me to get a new perspective~!
I have definitely thought of doing this. Another advantage is that maybe you could post your items and have others suggest cute combos that you might not ever think of. Server space permitting
I'm a mad nerd too! Mine is an excel workbook. It started out as a one page worksheet where I tracted what I bought, the date I bought it, and the cost per wear. It has now morphed into a major program that I use to track CPW, what I want/need for each season, and outfits that I like. It has almost become a hobby. I can't leave the house in the morning without updating what I'm wearing for the day. For me it has actually really helped me control my shopping budget a fair bit. I no longer buy things that are similar and I always get a good CPW out of everything because the numbers are right in front of my face.
I did something like this in high school. In one of my computer programming classes when you have to do silly programs, I programmed in my clothes and a matching system so it could randomly spit out outfits that went together. It was pretty cool but I never got around to doing my whole closet and I've since forgotten how to do it.
So now I keep a clothes diary. I write down what I do every day and who I do it with and what I wear. That way I won't double up on outfits with the same person and I put little stars next to things that really worked. It's just a tiny, little notebook from B&N I keep in my work bag. I date it at the top everyday and jot down my outfits. And then if I can't figure out what to wear on an evening out or a date, I look back to my diary to see what worked and what that person saw me in last. It's helped out a lot with my disorganized self!

I'm the same name over there (maybe lsu_batgirl). You can add me if you want. I need to get back to it and take more pics of my clothes.

You don't have to put in when you buy something or how much you spend. I don't. Its just there if you're interested. Give it a try.
Sephorablue, I just started working on a spreadsheet for all my clothes. I think it will really help me to see what I have. Plus I can check it before I go shopping or bring it with me to remind myself "I do not need anymore tee shirts."
You are brave, I never would of "confessed" to this without your post.
I mentioned this idea to some of my friends and they think i am insane, so I'm glad to know that I am not alone. They already think I'm over the top because I cut looks out of magazines and put them in a sticky photo album for future reference instead of saving a million magazines that i buy. Thank you for making me feel normal!
