and that's cheap for Anthro! I know what you mean though. All I can say is there stuff is super detailed and that has to cost more money, ok, not in this tops case, but usually.
I agree they are expensive and I have never bought anything from them. However, lately I have been thinking that I don't bat an eye over spending $80 on a pair of shoes that I may wear with two outfits. Why should it bother me to spend $60 on a shirt I may wear with two outfits? However, it does bother me. I guess it is all in our perception of what is important to us fashion-wise
And not only are they expensive but a lot of them are cheap-looking, IMO. I really don't like the fabrics they're made of, they just look terrible on me. I always hope to find something cute there on sale but haven't so far. I guess I'll just keep trying...
I think a lot of the reason its expensive is because of the customer service, aesthetic of the store, and their return policy. If you take home something, wash it, and it shrinks a couple of inches, they will take it back. Or if a button falls off or something. It's like Nordstrom in that aspect, except you need the receipt. Most places don't take things back after you wash them, i've had problems with J. Crew pants shrinking on me but alas, I can't do anything about it.
i love anthro and think that everything that i've purchased there (on sale or full price) is worth every last cent. like drew said, it's in the details... even the top you posted... there are a lot of special details going on that make it worth the price IMO. i think that as a company they work very hard to bring together a collection of clothes and accessories that you will not find anywhere else. even though they are a chain and catalog company, everything still feels unique and boutique-y when you walk through the doors. i have things that i bought at anthro 7 or 8 years ago that still look fresh to this very day because they weren't trendy then and they still aren't trendy... they are just special, a lot of times almost vintage-y and sometimes timeless looking. i just update my shoes and mix the pieces up a bit. geez, maybe i should get a job there!

LOL (about getting a job there!) I feel the same way you do Hot Cocoa. They just opened a store here and my heart melts every time I go in there. I've been fortunate however to be able to get all my stuff on sale and it does seem to go on sale pretty quickly. I love their catalogs too-I think they are very artistic looking and I keep them like a magazine to look back on.
I think Anthro is expensive, though I see how they justify their prices through the details, but to me it's not worth it. I am not really a fan of their items, just not my personal style. I find some of their things to be a bit much, they mix a lot of fabrics, styles and details, which for some is great but for me looks like an expensive collection of all things thrown together.

I agree with Erin and shopaholic. I love many things that Anthro carries; however, I find nearly an equal number of apparel items to be of poor quality and I usually find myself thinking, this should be about 40% less. I try to shop sales, or splurge on something I really think will hold up, but overall I'd say their quality is inconsistent.
