Is anyone else a little sad or freaked out about this merger? I am super worried because this is going to sound so dumb, but I love the cashmere at Lord and Taylor it is far superior than that of Bloomies and what is going to happen with that?
I just do not know if this is going to work there are so many malls that I know of with Macys, and Hechts or Filenes AND Lord and Taylor already that leaves so much empty retail space
This is from a Wall Street Journal article on the merger:
Analysts have speculated that as many as 100 locations may have to be closed, but Ms. Hoguet [May's finance chief] said the number of anticipated closures is "actually quite minor." Federated plans to convert most of the regional chains operated by May -- which also include Foley's and Famous-Barr -- to Macy's and Bloomingdale's.But the company hasn't yet made a decision on what it will do with the Lord & Taylor and Marshall Field's brands, Ms. Hoguet said. "Those are two very good names, and there are others," she said. "Before we make that decision, we would listen closely to the market and the customer."
My question is...what's gonna happen in a mall anchored by a Federated store (Macys) and a May store (i.e. out here in CA, Robinsons May)? The whole conglomerate is firghtening, but at the same time, these are the stores that are losing ground to the Targets and Wal-Marts of the world.
Personally, I don't like Lord and Taylor that much...maybe it's just that the locations I grew up with weren't that great. I'm not terribly fond of Macys except for the Herald Square one and the ones in Los Angeles (Beverly Center and Century City) but I Bloomies.
I have never been in a Marshall Fields so I won't pass judgment on that.
I'm excited about it. My mall has a filenes and a L+T. The L+T's atmosphere is so creepy it's like walking into the twilight zone (eerie lighting, huge store/sparsely placed merchandise, it seems like there is only two sales clerks in the entire store, there's never anyone at the cosmetics counters). It finally shut down a month or so ago. And Filenes is just mediocre, I've never seen a single piece of clothing in there that i would want-they do have good sales on housewares and shoes and of course if you need a high-end cosmetic fix. I've only been to the Macy's in Boston and I lasted about ten seconds because I turned around when I realized everything was designer and thus far beyond my budget.
Well all i have in my town is Foley's which isn't very nice so I'm hoping that the clothes get to be a little better with Macy's now. My only experience with L + T wasn't too good either. They reminded me of Foley's - constant sales and mediocre clothes.

I love Lord and Taylor. I used to frequent the one in downtown Pittsburgh during college. I found that their "lord and taylor" brand clothing was pretty cute. I think the store has since closed.....how sad!
I don't have much to offer. However, I will say that when Federated bought the Bon Marche, one of our big department stores, nothing changed. They finally are officially changing the name to Macy's, but they still carry all the same stuff.

are you talking about the holyoke mall? their l&t was really weird, i hated going in there...and that filene's is a mess. it's too crammed and there's always stuff all over the floor...but there's not much else to pick from around there!
