and the last thing i should be worrying about is registering for china, but i need help...what is a reasonable price for a place setting of nice china? i really like some kate spade designs but they go for $109 a place setting, not including bowls...and i don't want to put something overly pricey on the registry since none of my family/friends is independently wealthy.
ideas? nice but lower priced china? how do i choose a pattern? we have some decor that is going to stay with us for awhile - dark brown leather art deco-ish arm chair, red oriental rug, bronze plates from syria & middle east, etc... sort of traditional stuff...but i want to eventually lighten this decor up with a modern edge. so what colors should i incorporate into the dishware? plain white is boring to me..help!
it doesn't have to be china, but i think the designs on nice china are prettier than the plain dishes i've seen.
here is what i like, but am unsure if it would look "right" with the style of stuff we have - i guess i'm looking for elegant, but not stuffy; different but something that will work with many colors; and decently priced:
this is white but i like the pearls and the shapes...but is it too boring?
I haven't looked at china in a long time, but $109 a place setting doesn't sound all that outrageous to me. Is that high? If you do want china and don't register for it, thinking that you'll just buy it yourself later or do without, I'd think that through. I didn't register for china and I wish I had. I did end up with a very nice set from Williams-Sonoma, so you might want to try there. It wasn't cheap, but I love it for everyday and it can be dressed up too.
Anyway, I really like #3. I think it's classic. I love the blue (#2)too, but #3 might be more versatile. Not crazy about #1 for an investment like china. It's pretty, but you could get tired of the aqua in a few years. I think #4 might be a little too plain for china. I love the plain white look because you can do so much with it, but I would probably do that for everyday dishes.
this is the china that we have registered for - it's $119 per 5-piece place setting
we also have registered for plain white everyday dishes (the PB White collection from pottery barn) which are much lower in price.
when we were shopping i kind of used the prices of china on our friends' registries as a guide - we have been to 9 weddings in the past 2 years, and the china has been in a $100-150 range each time. my parents have also offered to buy us settings for holidays after the wedding if all of the settings aren't bought off the registry.
not sure if that helps at all, but that is what we are doing.
i really like the second pattern that you posted - it looks very similar to the china that we liked when we first got engaged (lenox blue frost). we liked it online, but in person it was way too heavy, so that is why we changed to our new pattern (i also decided i wanted something slightly more formal). i think that the light blue is classic but also different and fun. i kind of see the teal/brown (or black?) of the first set feeling a bit too funky or dated after a while (is that kate spade?) and i think that the plain white is really simple and classic, but a tad boring. you could always pick some plain white dishes for an everyday set and then select something with a color or pattern for your fancier china. williams sonoma has simple white "bistro" dinnerware for a really cheap price, so you could register for that if you are worried about registering for 2 different sets of dinnerware.
anyway, that's just my $.02! so exciting how soon your wedding is!

It's kind of funky being that it's square, but we love it. I thought it was expensive since it costs $79.99 per place setting, but now I see that it's not so much.
We have our Pflatzgraff every day dishes in Equator.
we registsered for this: http://www.michaelcfina.com/mcfina/images/patterns/CHWEDGGROS.jpg (i'll never figure out how to get pix on here) at $109 for 6 pieces. michaelcfina.com has more pieces for less price than bloomies for the SAME STUFF!!!!! bloomies is $129 for only 5 pieces!!!!!
thanks for the advice, ladies, I really like the china you've each picked out...I think I will go ahead and consider the $100 place settings - I never paid attention to the plates my married friends registered for and now I sort of wish I had! I think you guys are right, the first set (Kate Spade) just isn't classic enough for fine china. I really like #2 and #3, and feel that #3 is a tad more formal, and maybe makes more sense to register for? #4 is actually white with "pearls" around the inner rim, which adds some interest, but maybe not enough. we already have a decent collection of plain white dishes from Crate and Barrel (the stackable ones), but I'd really like some nice china. I'm the kind of person who would use it often - maybe not everyday, but not just with company.
just thinking out loud, sorry for the ramble...i'm starting to lose it a little bit!
Can each piece be bought individually also? That might be an option. I wasn't able to afford to buy my friend an entire set but on her registry was a spot for individual pieces to be bought so that's what I did.
