I guess it all depends on your financial status, and situation.
This is the average my social circle pays for a dress.
Didn't want to offend anyone here.

Check out Pearl's Place you can get great dresses at great discounts! I think that $230 is reasonable compared to what I have paid, up to $400. I am all for a great dress as long as I can wear it again and I was asked for my input. I agree that some out there are just cheap looking, even Vera Maids satin dresses are cheap looking( well some of them) and those are $280. I think that sometimes other fabrics are nicer looking, like a georgette( only sometimes). I love watters, jum hjlem and vivian diamond and they all are available at Pearls. Then they would be just under $200 and $180 always sounds better than $200. I think it is hard to get an honest opinon out of your bridemaids, b/c the girls that helped pick out the $400 dress complained the most. So sorry to just check out all you options for what type of dresses you like now and go from there. I am certain that we can help you find something beautiful at a great price!

how funny chic that you  mentioned Pearl's.  They are in New Orleans.  That's where I'm going to go when I have to shop for all this stuff.  From what I understand they are really great with all this stuff and still do alterations if you are in the store (most places if not all in Baton Rouge refuse to do them)

m,

Dont worry, i'm sure you did not mean to offend anyone. Someone (you and your family) in your family has worked and sweated very hard to get you and your family to the socio-economic level they are today. It's not luck, it's hard work and you should spend what you want. Most of us cannot relate to paying that much for a dress but that is OK. We know what we can afford and that's that.

Everyone's wedding no matter how much their dresses cost will be beautiful.

Why don't you just buy the dress as a gift for your bms?  Compared to your wedding gown, $230 is nothing.  I did buy my bms gown and shoes and it was a hit. =)

Also if you go to a trunk show you can get discounts that way too. For one wedding that I was in we got our dresses by a certain date and got 10% off and then the bride paid another 10%. I think it is very sweet to pay, but I would never expect any of my friends to. Just the fact that you are thinking of them and not just assuming that they will pay a lot. Every girl is so different, I make the least out of my circle of friends and I never complained, although I did get to go with all the brides to pick it out, so! But seriously post what you are thinking about and we will all help you try to find it cheaper or something similar!

I agree with most everyone here.  For my sister's wedding, I paid $350 for a Vera Wang (since it was my sister I didn't mind).  I have three more weddings coming up in 2005 and 2006 and will probably end up with 3 lilac dresses from the looks of it (I wish I could recycle but I can't).

$250 sounds reasonable to me, since all the ones I bought for the upcoming weddings have ranged from $220 - $350 ($350, $220, $290, $250)...  But once again, ask your BMs what they are confortable with.  None of my friends asked me so far, and I wished they had to at least get an idea.
