Sometimes I price my books at the lowest price, sometimes not. Usually, I look at all the used copies, find the cheapest price of the item with the same quality (Like New, Very Good, Good, etc.) and price my book the same as that one (the used list is sorted by price and then date, so if someone else has their book set at $10 and then you price yours at $10, yours will show up before theirs in the list because your listing is newer. They did this because for a while it was sorted just by price, so people kept going down a penny to get their listing first on the list and all the prices were being driven down).

That usually works the fastest/best for me, because even if there's a book up there for $5, it might be worse quality and people will be willing to pay a couple more bucks for my higher-quality one.

The penny sellers only really make money when they deal in large volumes. Amazon charges the buyer a standard postage amount (a couple dollars) depending on the size of the book, DVD, etc. A lot of times, you actually make a little bit of a profit on that because Amazon charges the buyer $3 for shipping (for example), but the post office only charges you $2 to ship it (so you've made a dollar in profit). If you sell 300 books a day, then you're making money off of selling books for a penny. But for the casual seller, it's not really worth it.

When you sell your books and DVDs, make sure to ship them with the "media mail" rate, it's a cheaper rate meant for media materials
