i need a gift for a baby boy's birthday.  he's 1 and i'm clueless...  any  advice would be helpfull.

I usually like to get a cute little outfit and a toy, that way the mom and baby get something  Old Navy, Gap & Gymboree have cute outfits.

How close are you to the mom? If close I would ask her if the baby boy needs toys or clothes, and what does he have too much of? Some babies have too many toys, books or clothes. I know as a parent and knowing others that we are hoping not to get something or wishing we get something else. Just an idea....

This!  I got this for my friend's son and he uses it all the time!  He sits on it and watches tv and flips it out and sleeps on it.  When other babies come over, they will sit on it together and stuff.  And of course he throws it around and stuff.  I bought it for his 1st birthday.  I know it seems like a weird gift.  I was skeptical, too.  I had asked another friend for baby gift buying advice and she said her son had this and loved it.  Then, it so happened that she was shopping with me the day I was buying the gift and there it was.  I bought it because I didn't want to look like I was saying I thought her idea was bad.  Good thing I did!

I do agree! My son loves his chair of the same material and I've been eyeing this style lately. I know a lot of kids love this kinds of chairs/sofa
