Can someone please re-explain the monogramming rule(s) to me? It isn't just your initials in the order of your names, is it - there's some other order? Or am I crazy? Let's say someone's name is Charles John Smith - the monogram isn't CJS is it? Or is it? Help!

yes, unless it's that diamond-shaped one, in which case the last name (in your example, the S), would be the bigger initial in the middle, and the C and J go on the sides of it.
depends on the type of monogram - if it's just initials all the same pt. size it would be C.J.S. if it's with a larger letter in the center, the large letter in the center is the last name initial CSJ - first initial last initial middle initial. if it's just one initial like on a handkercheif, traditionally, it's the last name initial for a man, the first name initial for a woman... that's all I know on the subject HTH

Tips for fonts styles Interlocking Monogram and Circle Monogram
Initial monograms are normally engraved with the Last initial in the center, the first initial on the left of it and the middle initial on the right. For example: if the name were "Kaitlynn Marie Jones" your inscription would be entered as KJM. Your monogram will be engraved exactly in the order you specify in the inscription field for the item.
Interlocking Monograms look best engraved of items for women, Jewelry Boxes, Key chains, and silver medallions for ladies gifts.
Interlocking Monogram also works well if engraving a single large initial on an item, like might be done on a Jewelry Box.

Hee...me too bumblebee...monograms on clothing here would only be worn ironically, and even then only if purchased from a hipster vintage store and monogrammed for the previous owner. ;) I fully expect to take sh** for this from friends.
The ring is for me...and you all might think I am a weirdo but I am thinking of putting my first initial and the first initial of each of my dogs instead of my initials only. What are the rules on pet monograms?
Detroit - thanks for posting all thos pics...you are so thorough!

HA HA HA...I love that!
A few years ago, before I decided that initials on t-shirts and bags was the lamest trend ever, I bought a t-shirt w/ an M on it. It was M for Mitch, my dog.
