professional or not?

I tried on this suit in H&M the other day. It was a skirt/blazer combo; the skirt about knee-length, the blazer with 3/4th length sleeves. The suit was medium gray, fine plaid, accented with a few stripes of light pink. I was in love with the thing from the moment I tried it on. My boyfriend, however, took one look at it and said it was totally unprofessional. He took issue with the color combo (too cutesy, apparently) and the fact that the suit was a polyester blend (which doesn't really please me, either). He said it might be fine to wear to a normal day at the office but not for an interview - which was what I wanted to buy the suit for. What do you girls think?

Pink may be a bit unprofessional but in defense of H&M their suits actually are made well and last a while

I'm thinking its not quite professional enough for interviews just because it is 3/4 sleeve and most people do/expect long sleeve.

I think you should get it, but not to wear to the interview. If it makes you feel good, buy it, but (and this is just my opinion) wool has a much better drape and looks right for a suit, esp. when you want to impress someone. You're best off with something very conservative for an interview.

It sounds cute, but I agree that 3/4 sleeves are not right for an interview.

Depending on the job you're interviewing for, I wouldn't worry as much about the pink stripe as about the 3/4 sleeves. If you're going straight-up business or law, pink would be out, but if you're going for a more creative job, the pink stripe might be okay. I think 3/4 sleeves for an interview suit are not a good idea though.

Also, never a cheap suit for an interview. The people you're interviewing with can tell immediately. I don't mean cheap as in price but as in quality. If it's good quality, fine, otherwise spend the bucks, it will pay off in the end.

Good luck on the interview!

I think your bf is right. The suit sounds adorable but not for a job interview. I would stick to solid colors, black or grey, w/ long sleeves. You want to come out of the job interview w/ them remembering your qualifications not your suit. ;) I would pick something basic and non offensive, but well fitting.

Looks like I'll be wearing my blah gray suit tomorrow. Seriously, thanks for the advice! Guess the boy was right after all. I can definitely see how the H&M suit would be considered inappropriate for an interview - the sleeves, the color, yeah, it wouldn't really work. Maybe I'll save my money and get a fabulous, classy suit after I land my first job
