so heres the dilemma

i have an interview on wednesday with a law firm and i dont know what to wear.  i tried to buy a suit today but i couldnt find a single one that i liked or that i liked in my size.  would it be awful if i didnt wear a suit?  i want to make a good impression but i dont have a suit.

could i just wear dress pants and a button down top or is a skirt with a button down top better?  button down top or sweater?  maybe both???

i'm really confused and i really need this job so please help!

i hate to say it because you sound really discouraged, but i really do think you need to wear a suit.  especially at a law firm, you want to give yourself every opportunity to shine, and it's no use walking in the door with possible negative points stacked against you.  plus, you will feel so confident and professional in a new suit.

where have you looked for suits? what styles do you like (skirt, pants...?)--post some details and i (and the other girls, i'm sure) will try to help.  have you tried banana republic and/or j. crew? i love their suiting because you can buy different sizes for tops and bottoms.

thanks bumblebee for your response!

i tried checking express, limited, banana and jcrew.  in the store they mostly had after christmas sales and very few suit options.  i'm open to buying a suit (i certainly need one) but im having a few problems finding ones that i like and is flattering.

i like shorter jacket styles like these...

and hate longer styles like this...

generally if the jacket hits below my hips and covers my butt its not very flattering on me.  i have a boyish figure so jackets like these tend to look a bit boxy and unflattering.

if you are truly freaking out, maybe you should just concentrate on the suit jacket. you could probably piece it with something else from your wardrobe. i also think skirt is alot nicer than pants. i just think it looks more polished and works better esp. if you don't have a complete suit.

have you try ann taylor or talbots? they may have more conservative looks that would work.

also try brooks brothers and bcbg.

I know you said you like shorter.. but I love the neck on this one! I think this could be used alot causally as well.

I agree. You need a suit.. Definately try more "grown-up" stores.. Ann Taylor, etc.. maybe even bloomies and macys.. I'm sure they have suits all year round.

Good luck!

i hate to say it, but you'll have to suck it up and buy a suit. i second what lsubatgirl said, go to macy's, bloomingdales, or nordstrom. that type of store always has suits.  also if you're looking for a shorter jacket, you might try a dress suit (that's not the correct term, but it's the type of suit that's just a dress and a jacket.) the blazers on those tend to be more fitted. good luck with the shopping and your interview.

Definitely look for a suit. A dark color is always good to have like for funerals and job interviews (yes morbid). I always think the tahari 3 piece is a great buy you get a jacket, pants, and skirt all in one

You'll have to wear a suit.

I got my interview suit at French Connection, and they had the shorter jacket style.

Also try Loehmanns, TJ Maxx and Marshalls. HTH!

I really like the looks of the jacket you posted.  Did you not like the pants or what?

Where do you live? If you have a Zara in your area, go there. They have really cute suits that are very inexpensive but look designer.
