So I went to Old Navy today to buy some last minute gifts....
of course I end up picking out 10 shirts for myself. The line to the dressing room was rather long, so instead of trying the things on, I decided to just purchase them all and then return the ones I didn't want at a later time. I do this alot. I was also buying two pairs of baby booties ($3.50 each), 5 gift bags ($1 or $0.50 each), and 2 jeweled cardigans ($9 each). These were the gifts.
The cashier rang up the gifts... and has she was removing the hangers from the 10 shirts that I picked out for myself... I guess she got distracted. She just stuffed all the shirts in the bag!!!!!!!! She only rang me up for the gifts and didn't ring up the shirts. The total was about $35.
If this wasn't Old Navy.... and a smaller boutique I would have definitely said something... but I just kept silent and left the store. I got all the shirts for free, which was a good feeling... but in a way I feel like I shouldn't have gotten away with it. Should I feel guilty about this? Or just think of it as a very fortunate Xmas gift?
The right thing to do of course would be to take the shirts back and explain what happened. Of course, there is always the chance that they would accuse you of stealing since you have no proof of what actually happened. I would just keep the shirts and consider yourself lucky - it might cause everyone alot more trouble if you went back to try and explain.

I know many would say you should feel guilty but if it happened to me, I would do the same thing as you. It's a huge store, not a mom and pop like you said. I don't know,,,that's just me!
Something like this happpend to my friend, but she was the cashier that gave away the clothes. The person went back to the store told the manager what happened and my friend got fired.

Old Navy? Maybe this is moral rationalizing but I think they can take the hit! Really, I wouldn't worry about this, there are no victims! And as someone posted, going back might get the cashier in trouble.

Something like this happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I was at Target and I decided I was going to buy myself a case for my Palm Pilot so I picked one out. I bought some other stuff and went to the checkout lines to pay for it. I don't know why but the chick rang up the case and then took out the case charge out and rang the rest of my stuff up. All I knew was ... "Hey! I spent alot less than I thought!" My friend ended up telling me that she didn't ring the case up so I got the case for free. I didn't say anything because hey, it's not my fault the cashier didn't pay attention. It's not my job to tell her what to do. So... I got myself a $20 Palm Pilot case for free!
Something like this happened to me about 6 years ago at a Banana -
I still feel guilty about it - if I were you I would go back. It's not like the extra cost will really break the bank. There's no need to include the cashier in it - the only way they will know who it is if you tell them or show them the receipt. just say you don't have the receipt, but bring back in the items that you didn't pay for and ask them to ring you up.
First let me say, that I would most likely have done the same thing. But I think that, ethically, it is wrong...it is just easier to morally distance oneself from large corporations. Still, Old Navy probably budgets for such allowances and losses.

I think this may make it look like she stole them and feels guilty now. The only way she would have known which specific items she wasn't charged for is with the receipt. It would be kind of weird to say you don't have the receipt.
I would call the store and talk to the manager and let them know what happened, who knows they might tell you not to worry about it. But it doesn't matter if it is a large corporation or a mom and pop store, it is still wrong. Don't mean to rain on your parade.
i would absolutely go back because of karmic reasons and because i would just feel far too guilty, but i never thought of the thing with the cashier getting in trouble. i actually love FP's idea and i think you should do that--that way they know that you are being honest (because what shoplifter would actually call first if they had a sudden change of heart?) and they will be able to figure out what you should do.
i say take the money you would've spent on the shirts and give it to charity. don't try to return the shirts just because that could lead to all kinds of bad results (firing of the cashier, them acting like you're a guilty shoplifter, etc.)
something like this happened to me once--i couldn't find my atm, called the bank, they told me someone had made a $40 charge at someplace called the 'paradise bar' the night before, someplace i'd never heard of and that sounded like some kind of seedy stripper joint or something so i told them it wasn't me and they credited back my account and sent me a new atm. then i find my card in my car, realize i had bought gym clothes at my gym that i totally forgot about and the place selling the gym clothes was the gym's smoothie place called...the paradise bar. oops, my bad :P so then i call the bank all apologetic, the customer service guy laughs says thanks for being honest but there's no way to undo what happened.
whatever, sorry for the tangent but point is old navy may not be able to undo what at the end of the day was an honest mistake and accident. i would just feel horrible if some poor overworked cashier got fired as a result.
Happy Holidays to you, Dont feel bad, I guarentee the cashier wont even get in trouble, and old navy will probably get insurance for all missing inventory. Keep it. I know its not the right thing to do but it wasnt your fault!
Old Navy can take the hit and I agree if you feel guilty give what irt would have costed to charity!! The cashier made an honest mistake and you got some free clothes!
I had this kinda thing happen to me, but just with one item. I didn't feel bad at the moment, but now looking back I feel kinda guilty especailly knowing that they were putting something in my bag and not charging.
I am with Esquiress, make a donation in the amount the shirts would have cost. And if this ever happens again, point the mistake out to the cashier right then and there to ease any guilt that might happen after the fact.
