Hey all - Catching the acela in a few hours to pop to NYC for the wekeend, and I have totally overpacked. I am gonig to need to pare down my selections (I have left myself too many options).
Here are my occasions and what I have packed (not counting the poncho and sweater I have packed for during the day Sat/Sun - also will be wearing jeans, a green cord blazer, a black cowlneck, and dark maroon boots on the train up). Please help me decide what to eliminate. This is particularly challenging b/c will be in the company of gay men 24/7 and must be sort of fabulous yet understated because we're not doing anything really fancy.
Occasion 1 - tonight. Dinner with gaggle of guys in Chelsea. Proposed outfit (a standby these days):
(hey, did you notice we can resize pictures just with your cursor? cool!)
Jimmy choo boots
plus a black corduroy blazer, black cashmere scarf, and this bag (which looks more silver in real life):
I guess maybe just the usual diamond studs, etc as jewelry... don't really have anything else that would work. Will I be ok? Underdressed?
Ok, so tomorrow night is a bit of a conundrum as well. We're going to see a show and before that to dinner with my friend and the exec. producer of the show he's on (he's a TV person). And we'll go backstage after the show. I can't decide whether to wear a dress, like my brown and black houndstooth DVF, or perhaps my leopard DVF), or the following outfit, so I have packed it all! I *want* to wear this:
gorgeous camel cashmere cowl - very "rich" looking
(regular sevens, no crystals)
boots like this but no ruching
Plus a camel cashmere blend Kenneth Cole coat (knee length) with sort of a standup/funnel collarand this suede furla bag. Again, large diamond studs, rings, etc.
Too casual? Should I wear a DVF and black pumps instead? (can't wear my boots with the dresses - they're mid-calf and the dress hits the wrong place for them to work). Help!

I think the first outfit is perfect, but that the second might be too casual for dinner and a show. Unless the show is off off broadway? And the restaurant isn't very fancy? I think I need more details. I think the DVF dress would be really nice. Or do you have a pencil skirt that you could wear with the sweater and boots? That would be really cute.

Um... yes. 3 pairs - but in fairness, am wearing one pair. The choos are too nice for the train and the maddens too high for the train. Plus, the train boots are my during the day footwear as well.
The show isn't a big show. And dinner is TBD, but probably casual-ish yet hip. Maybe the leopard DVF so I don't feel stodgy.... I do have a charcoal pencil skirt... hmmm...

but wrap dresses take up hardly any room! you should bring them both, even if you don't think you'll wear them. but don't listen to me, i'm no help, i'm a chronic overpacker. i can hardly wait to pack tonight for my 17 day trip...oy. i will almost quite literally bring my entire closet.
i do agree though that unless you know the show is low-key and the restaurant not very fancy, the sat. night outfit is a touch too casual. mostly just cause of the jeans...the rest of the outfit sounds great.

Hmmm... I am wearing one pair of jeans on the train, though. But I probably can leave the poncho.

I would definitely go with a dress/pump combo for the show. While you do see all kinds, those who are 'dressed down' always look a bit out of place IMHO . Have fun!

i like the idea of the leopard dress. though i think if you really *want* to wear the cowl neck you can maybe swap the regular jeans for trouser jeans or nice non-denim pants (then again i have an irrational fear of being overdressed). it's also going to bit a bit chilly in the city so keep that in mind. regardless everything you posted is very nice, and you always "look" (from what i gather since i've never seen you) really put together so i think you whatever you pick you'll be gorgeous

Honey you should never fear being over dressed fear being under dressed (though I have a friend from So. Cali and she blames it on being from there)
My Father taught me one thing in life, you can never ever over pack. So therefore I would bring everything. You just never Know. Im no help, but I guess my overpacking needs to be cut down to a minimum as well. I always bring one large suit case for clothes, a smaller suit case for shoes and accessories, and one for cosmetics and beauty products.
Probably too late, but thought I'd throw it out there anyway. I would do black trousers with the cashmere cowl neck sweater outfit for Sat night and everything else sounds perfect. Hope you have fun
