as many of you may remember, i have been lusting after this coat for months -
it is the most gorgeous coat and i love it. regular price is $898.
i noticed that it is currently on sale in the store for 25% off, making it about $675 pre-tax. i have tried it on in the store and it looks made for my gangly, bottom-heavy form.
i am wondering if i would be insane to spend part of my year-end bonus on this coat. as much as i love the style and the color, is this color practical (especially since i live in a dirty city)? is this too much to spend on a coat like this, even with the discount? i will admit, if i buy this coat, it will be the most expensive clothing item that i own (aside from my wedding dress) - is it a worthy investment?

i love the coat, and think it's very you, and i would say get it if it were another color. i know that even without realizing it you can get very dirty in nyc...
i say don't buy it. didn't br have a similar coat this year? maybe you can find one of those still floating around...i just hate to think that you'd have this fabulous coat that you'd either be afraid to wear because it would get ruined, or that you would wear and it would get ruined...
i need caffeine, i'm not sure if i'm making sense today.

Can you treat it to repel dirt at all? Maybe that would help some. I love it and would definetly get it if I had a bonus to spend but you are right about the color. If there was a way to protect it or in a different color I'd get it today. What is the possibility of it going on sale more after christmas? Can you hold out just a little longer?
I would get it for sure in another color. The winter white is dubious because it will probably get dirty easily, but I think it would be difficult to find another coat that's tailored to your form and whose style you adore. I'm with lsubatgirl, could you risk any longer and wait until it goes on sale again?
i'm torn. part of me wants to say wait, but the other part of me knows if you wait they might not have it in your size anymore. i guess if they have several on the rack i would wait until at least after the holidays (maybe mid-jan) just to see if it gets marked down anymore. also is there a chance that they carry the same coat in other stores, specifically a dept. store. i'm thinking if it's in a dept. store you could probably get it for cheaper than you could at a small boutique. but other than that i think it's a great coat and i love the color.
it is a lot of money, but the coat is beautiful and very classic--especially if you really love it, you will wear it for years. do you have any other big purchases you have been saving up for (i mean except for wedding-related). if not, i think maybe it's time to splurge on an investment piece.
the coat is by searle and as for as i know, only sold at their stores and on their website. i have actually seen several searle coats at the new filene's basement in the city this winter (some of which i saw in the store throughout the fall), so i could take the ultimate crapshoot and wait to see if it shows up in my size at FB for like $200 - that would be the ultimate sign that i am fated to own this coat. heh.
as far as i know, it doesn't come in any other colors. i love the winter white, but it would get filthy in the city, even with regular cleanings. i have a winter white down jacket that i got last fall and at the end of the season it was absolutely grey. i can only imagine how wool would take to city grime.
i don't have any other big purchases in mind and had originally planned to selflessly (well, sort of) turn over my entire bonus to our wedding fund. i do feel guilty spending so much on a coat, especially after half of the coat season has already passed for this year and especially for something that is less versatile because of the color (and by that i don't mean that it won't go with everything, but rather what asf alluded to - that i might be afraid to wear it for fear of ruining it).
i'll probably wait until january to make a final decision - i don't get my bonus until the 30th anyway. if it is still available, maybe it will be marked down further. i guess i feel in my gut that i shouldn't get it, but i really do love it. if only money were no object. sigh.

I say get it... but wait! I feel like after Xmas or closer to Xmas there will be greater discounts. I have had a winter white coat for since high school and I don't think it's ever gotten really really dirty. I guess I've always been more careful since it's a "white" coat. Since it will be the most expensive thing you own, I'm sure that you will take great care of it. Winter white always looks so fresh and modern... and I really like this shape.
I think $500 is ok for a coat you love and that will last you along time... but at $675, I would wait it out.
Where is the coat sold? I would be nervous of it selling out of my size from a small store but if it's at a Saks, Barneys, or some place like that... then you can have a little more breathing room since it is probably avail. at other stores if they run out at the branch near you.
I think it's beautiful, but I would worry about getting it dirty and I think that would keep me from buying it. Also though, I'm 99% sure I saw it in Bloomingdale's when I was in New York. I remember seeing the coat and thinking, "Oh that's the one smash wants." You could call and ask.

i *think* i've seen searle coats at bloomies too. not the one you want, but i'm pretty sure i've seen some tweedy searle coats at the soho store. i
