I just majorly purged my closet. I watched like 3 episodes of WNTW last night and went nuts this morning. Only difference is...I don't have a $5,000 Visa Purchase Card to replenish. Hmmm...
I'm about to go round two! I did the first mega purge last month or whenever the last marathon was on, and now I'm going to do a seriously brutal one. Hubby is starting to feel bad for me because there are so few things hanging on my side of the closet . It's no $5k, but it's something!
Honestly, I didn't even feel the first one. I wasn't actually wearing any of that stuff anyway, which is the point! I have a hard time finding pieces that fit, are flattering, and are appropriate for many occasions, so I've been doing lots of shopping but not normally too much buying. And what I have bought so far hasn't sunk the ship, yet!
Don't you wish you could talk a friend into nominating you and dress badly for the secret footage, so you could go and do all that shopping and get tons of nice stuff? I sooooo do ....

HAHAHAHAHahahahahahahaha.... OMG Elle, I thought I was the only one corrupt enough to dream up that idea! I was just discussing my strategy with my boyfriend the other night... take $200 and go hog-wild at the worst thrift store ever. It would be so much fun dreaming up appalling outfits to make! I think the hardest thing, though, would be letting my hair grow so it lost its shape and my gray roots came in...
hahaha I've thought of doing it too. But wouldn't you potentially have to dress terible for months? I mean you wouldn't know when they start filming right?
I purged my closet right before I moved in November. I got rid of (and I'm not kidding) 14 trash bags (the really big kitchen ones) of clothes, 2 bags of shoes, 2 bags of bags and a miscellaneous jewelry/scarf bag. Crazy! And last summer, I got rid of 7 trash bags of clothes. I don't miss any of the stuff I got rid of and I still have too many clothes.
Right now, I don't have a closet because the squatter roommate hasn't moved out of our place yet (one more week- but that's a whole different post.) So, I have all of my clothes on rolling racks and boxes. I still have 4 rolling racks (one of them with a double bar) of clothes and at least 3 large boxes and a suitcase full of stuff. I have no idea why or how I accumulated all that crap. Once the leeching roommate moves out, I'll go through everything again. But this round will be a little tougher and I'll have to be more brutal.
I guess most of the stuff I purged (okay, all of it) was pretty inexpensive, so the tax deduction we'll get from the donation mitigates my guilt. That closet real estate is important! You could always consign your more expensive items - you won't get it all back of course, but if you have a decent amount of stuff it would be enough to buy a few new things. Easier than ebay!
Bloomie - may I suggest a halfway-house for your possibly unwanted clothing? I bag mine up and put it in an out of the way place (empty drawer, extra closet, garage, whatever) and if I don't remember what's in there and/or don't grieve the loss of any particular item after a month or 3, I send it away. I have rescued an item on occasion, at least this way you know right where it is if you find you can't live without a certain piece!

I try to closet purge when I take out and put away my winter clothes. Some stuff is on "probation" in a section of my closet, and if I don't wear it, it goes in the donate-to-charity bag. I used to be horrible at purging my closet, which resulted in my never being able to find anything.
Wow...I've been in a constant state of this since the start of the New Year. First I emptied out all the bins in the basement and threw almost everything out...then it was on to my closet...and then I went the step further and started emptying out the whole house!
I read about a cool tip for people who need to minimize the "stuff" in their house. I am not one of them, but I know people who are. The author suggested that you go around your house and actually, physically touch everything you like/love and want to keep. Whatever you don't take the time to touch should be eliminated. I'll have to recommend that to my mom!
It sounds like a weird activity. But, I guess if you go through your whole house, you'll get sick of touching everything that is sitting out.
Elle, I have thought of that secret footage thing too...
I also have a "halfway house" for things I don't think I want anymore. It's a closet in the spare bedroom. I just went in there the other day to get something I decided I wanted to keep, actually. Someday I will give it all away to charity!
Not to threadjack, but I recall reading that WNTW found out that one of their "participants" got herself nominated in just this way. They did not let her on.
I was just thinking about my NY resolution of purging my unnecessary shoes! Maybe today...
UPDATE: 14 pairs have been escorted out of the closet...and you really cannot tell.
