My friends and I recently had a conversation that I'd love some more fashionista input on!
I am a big fan of fishnets. I only wear them when going out with friends, though, and usually reserve them for the winter months so there's only a few inches of fishnet peeking out from between my boots and my skirt. Even though I don't think they scream "hooker" (obviously, because I wear them), they did always seem a little too much for the office to me. One woman I was talking to said that she wears them to work with a skirt and pumps, and has actually seen a minister wear them while conducting a religious service.
I was pretty surprised at that, because I normally wouldn't even think of wearing them to the office or in front of a large group of people. I guess I'm afraid of them being too sexy.
What do you guys think? Could I wear brown fishnets to work tomorrow with boots and a knee-length skirt, or is this something I should continue to reserve for after-hours?

Personally I wouldn't wear them to work, but I do think you can make a classy outfit with them. But also, fishnets will always say "sexy" so it just depends if you are comfortable with that at work.
I've seen some outfits with fishnets that were nice, but I can't seem to find them now.
Honestly, I say go for it. I think the problem with fishnets isn't the fishnets themselves--it's the connotation that hookers wear them with miniskirts and sky high, nasty heels. I think if you wear them to work with a knee length skirt and tall boots, you're fine. I also think that a more subtle color than black also works to your advantage. I have a pair of nude fishnets that I wear pretty often with a knee length skirt and boots and I like the way it looks. I think as long as your outfit is otherwise pretty tame and you're not showing a lot of leg, you're fine.
I say no. I agree with subwolley that they always scream 'sexy' to me. I do have a pair of black tights that have a fishnet pattern in them. Hard to describe, but basically they are black with a black diamond pattern in them- can't see any skin. I will wear those occasionally with a skirt and boots.

For example the "large" kind with the bigger fishnet pattern in black is VERY sexy and IMO should be avoided at work.
However the "small" fishnets pattern in nude or grey I think can be very appropriate for work (depending on your work enviorment too).
I used to wear suits to work alot ( back when I worked in a more formal version of retail) and I would wear "small" fishnets to jazz up a boring dress or pants suit.

i have to agree with this. fishnets can be done tastefully and not come off as too sexy. i've worn dark brown, grey and nude, but i pair them with a knee-length dress or skirt and tall boots.
eta: target makes a pair of small fishnets that are tasteful, yet fun.
I agree that small-weave fishnets are fine for work. I have nude and plum ones that I wear to work and I've never felt like they were too sexy. I do always wear fleshtone stockings underneath.

I have a pair like this, too. And I wear them to work. I really like them.
I think fishnets are fine but I do sometimes feel like they scream sexy and I do get weird looks on the train...
I wear them usually with boots and a dress so that only a bit at the knee pokes out. Otherwise it can look too "costumey." I found a pair of stockings at Macys that were almost a "mock" fishnet, not just elastic strung together with holes but a fishnet pattern instead.
Also Banana Republic has tights every year that have a little more coverage but still the fishnet pattern.
I'm a receptionist at small computer part distrib. company and I wear fishnet a lot. The boss is pretty conservative an him, nor anyone else has ever said anything. I usually wear them with a wool a-line skirt that goes to the knees.
I think wearing fishnets with a knee-length skirt & boots to work is fine!! I've worn fishnets to work a lot... usually my nude or brown ones, medium-small weave, always with a knee-length skirt, sometimes with my maryjanes, sometimes with my knee-high boots and sometimes with my camel mid-calf boots. I think they look really cool with my mid-calf boots. I've also worn black fishnets but in black I would only wear very small-weave ones which are very subtle.
