how about just appetizers and champagne?  you can buy fairly inexpensive champagne, and serve an assortment of appitizers.  I wouldn't worry about providing a meal - you're not obligated to -- a little post-ceremony celebration will do. you can also get sparkling grape juice for yourself (comes in a champagne bottle and is festive)

there's no need to have a huge party if you can't afford it or don't want it. people will get over it.

I agree with D's idea. Or champagne and dessert if it's in the evening!

Thanks for the ideas. We are to just have our cake and punch. FH sister is making the cake for us. D thanks for reminding me that a meal is not necessary. People starting asking about it and I was feeling a little worried.

SmallFry...when's the wedding and reception...I'm sorry if you already told us but I don't remember.
A few suggestions for going low key...if you have Trader Joe's nearby you could honestly pick up everything there...great assortment of mini apps and mini desserts.
I catered the reception for my son's baptism myself and would be more than happy to share the menu which was, if I do say so, delicious but easy.
Just one other word of advice: if you plan on going the catering route and want to save the most money, call it a party, not a wedding...the 'wedding markup' for food, drinks and flowers is ridiculous!
