I'm realizing that I don't really have a coat for this season, the 50 degree weather. I'd like something I can wear with jeans, casual but warm but not thick and puffy. Definately above the knee, would prefer one that hits at hip level but not stuck on that. Nothing more than $300 since it gets cold quick in Chicago I won't wear it for long! TIA!! I'm tired of layering sweater over sweaters!

A little above your budget - but on sale at Nordstrom for $477 I think it is really cute and a classic
I like this one too, just at $300 - don't know why I picked out leather ones, but I really like both, for a lighter weight jacket that you'll wear for more than one season
Not really sure what type of coat you're looking for, but I have an absolutely fantastic one from J. Crew that I bought a few years back. It's a very standard olive green safari type jacket with lots of pockets. It's a medium weight cotton that is warm enough by itself but also works fabulously with a hoodie or sweater underneath. Just checking really quick, J.Crew doesn't have any on their website but it's an option to keep in mind if you think a traditional peacoat might be too heavy.
