What do you normally do to your nicer pairs of shoes to protect them? Do you do this before you wear them? And how much does it normally cost? I just got a few new pairs of heels and would like to protect them as much as possible.
I spray my shoes (and all my bags) with a water repellent spray. I don't wear my good shoes in the rain - admittedly mostly easy since I work from home often - and I clean them regularly at home, and after every cleaning, re-spray with leather protector / water repellent. My shoes last me for years and years. :)

I have my cobbler put a protective sole on my nicer heels. I find they wear better and it adds a little bit of additional padding. I also replace the heels the minute a bit of the nail starts showing. The protective sole is usually about $15 and the heel tip replacement is about $5. I walk A LOT, so both these changes add significantly to the life of my shoes. My shoes also seem to last forever.
Question about the "protective sole". Can they be put on even after they've been worn? On my nicer shoes with leather soles (on the bottom of the shoe) - They seem to wear out really fast. Can I put them on even after they's been worn?

Yup, you can have the protective soles put on even after the regular sole is worn.
