please help me with a wedding outfit for saturday!
Permalink Closed

this is the dress i bought for the wedding, after trying on about 50 others that didn't look right or were WAY too spendy. the wedding will be outside with a reception at the church afterward. here's my questions:
1. is black okay for a wedding?
2. what type of shoes should i wear? flats or heels?
3. what kind of accessories should i wear?
4. what can i do to casual-ify this dress, or is that possible?

here's my shoe options:
-black high heels
-black flats with bow on toe
-red and white spotted high heeled wedges with bow
-dark pink high heels (v. painful but i'll suffer if need be)

i know you girls can help me! smile
TIA!!

I'm not always the best at accessorizing, so we'll see what the other girls suggest, but here are my ideas!

Pretty dress! I think black is okay for a wedding -- but it would be good to add some colorful accessories, though. A brightly colored pashmina would be great, as would some coordinating jewelry. I think that if you make the jewelry fun that will help make the outfit more casual.

I think you probably want to do heels with a floor-length dress like that. If the wedges are not espradrilles or cork, they could maybe work. I'm leaning towards the black or pink heels, depending on the other colors you want to accessorize iwth.

Black is fine, unless you're in a more traditional part of the country where people frown on it.

I agree with Littlebean that heels are best. I hate to say it but I'd prefer the pink.

It's hard for me to think of ways to make a floor-length black dress more casual, but there's a slight chance a less casual espadrille could work - here's an example:

I heard it's okay, but I haven't seen anyone wear it at any weddings I've been to recently. However, when I was 19, I wore a really nice floor length black dress to my aunt's wedding...she got divorced a year later and she jokes that I jinxed her from the start by showing up in a black dress. She's just kidding, but I always remember that and haven't worn black to a wedding ever since!

i've felt hesitant to wear black to weddings too, but at almost every single one i've been too, someone has been wearing black, so don't worry about it. smile

i think heels would work better with a floor-length dress too, but my one hesitation with that is you said the wedding itself is outside.  will the heels be hard for you to walk on, depending on what kind of surface it is?  for example, my cousin had his outdoor ceremony in the spring, and the ground was soft.  my mom wore high heels and they ended up sinking in yard.  the shoes were fine afterwards but she felt pretty awkward moving around.
