Same suit twice?
Permalink Closed

I only own one suit (i've never had to wear them to work, so I just have one for interviewing).

I have a second interview with the same company today and I'm meeting the president. I already wore the suit on the first interview. I was thinking of just wearing a button-up and black pants, but then I feel like I'd be making a bad impression because I'm meeting with the president and I should probably look my best.

I was thinking of just wearing the suit again, but this time pairing it with a different color cami and leaving the blazer open (last time I left it buttoned the whole time).

It's a gray very subtly pinstriped suit..so I feel like it has a little more personality than the average black suit (which they probably wouldn't even notice if I wore twice) so it's more memorable and therefore harder to wear two times.

Thoughts?

I probably wouldn't wear it again but I'm just super paranoid about that kind of thing. In reality no one will notice I'm sure. If it were me, I'd wear the pants or a pencil skirt, button up shirt and a cardigan. You'll still look professional, I def. wouldn't go out and buy another suit.

I just wish I had known there were going to be multiple rounds of interviews because I would have saved the suit for meeting the president. I really feel like at this point any little thing could put one candidate ahead of me (i'm assuming its' down to like 2 or 3 of us) and it's risky NOT to wear the suit.

I'd wear it. Most likely, they won't remember it. And the president hasn't ever met you before, correct? I think as long as accessories/layers are different, you should be fine. If this was a fashion house or something I could see a problem, but I doubt anyone in publishing would notice.

Is there any way you can make another suit out of something you already own? Like if you have black pants, get a black blazer?

Who did you meet with last time, will they be seeing you again? Or will just the receptionist notice?

I remember when I got my last job I knew there would be rounds of interviews (I think thats how they all do it nowadays). I wore a wrap dress my first round with HR, a black dress/white blazer the second round with the manager, then a black suit with the EVP and CEO.

I work in the engineering field so I've never even had to have a suit to tell you the truth.  If your profession is more business professional then mine I guess you probably would need to wear the suit.  No one that's interviewed me has ever worn a suit though, presidents included.

I'll probably meet with the HR lady again today as well.

Honestly, there's nothing in my closet that could pass as a suit and I HATE wearing skirts to interviews because I think they make my legs look too sexy (not to sound conceited).

I think the only other option would be black pants and some type of button-up/cardi type thing. I do have some wrap dresses, but idon't think those look professional enough and again there's the leg problem.

I would wear it. I agree with you about it being risky to not wear one. We don't wear suits at work, but we hate it when our interview candidates don't. Chances are they will not be able to tell you wore it last time. If they can they won't care. I can't remember what a single person wore to an interview because I am focusing on their answers. If I did remember, it wouldn't be a big deal because most people don't have more than one suit and it's silly to buy a new one for one interview.

I would change up your accessories and your shirt/shoes so that it seems new again.

Good luck and can't wait to hear how it goes!

Wear it again. If by a longshot anyone notices, they'll probably assume you own so many suits you can't remember which one you've worn when.

Definitely wear it. Never take a chance on dress in an interview, especially if it's a straight-laced place. Lots of people wear suits over again, reuse part of the same suit, or plain old have 6 suits that look just alike. I wouldn't worry about it. Change up your shirt and accessories and I think you'll be fine. Better to be safe than sorry.

Why not wear a dress? As long as it hits past your knees and isnt tight, trust me its not too sexy. I feel like I've seen 200 outfits on your stylediary page that are interview appropriate!

wear the suit again with different accessories. I seriously doubt they'll remember exactly what you wore.

I wouldn't stress too hard over wearing the same suit twice as long as you wear different accessories, etc. Perhaps if you have another jacket, like solid black, you could pair that with the pants, or is that too unprofessional? I don't remember since I wear jeans 90% of the time I'm at work.

Definitely wear the suit - if you're meeting w/the CEO of the company, you definitely need to be in a suit.  I'd wear the suit again w/a different top underneath and different accessories.  Good luck!

Thanks ladies! I ended up wearing the suit! The HR only saw me for like 2 seconds as she led me into the presidents office and briefly introduced us.

God, it was SO hellish though...I may start another thread...

I think I remember an article once that discussed this issue. If I recall, the author suggested that wearing the same suit with different shirt/cami and accessories could help you succeed in the hiring process. Apparently, the consistent appearance can contribute to the interviewers from the first meeting feeling more comforable and familiar with you. You know, you're not springing anything on them by wearing something completely different. I'm sure this is all subconscious and quite subtle---but interesting nonetheless.
