I think I love this dress, obnoxious patchwork madras, potential pregnancy alert and all.
I can't decide if I could make it work or not. My local J. Crew only had a 4 and a 10 in stock. I think I need a 6 or 8 because the 4 is too small in the chest.
The 4 (can't zip up completely without flattening chest to pancake).
The 10 (which fits but since there's room in the chest, I'm thinking that going down a size would reduce the drowning in fabric look)
What do you girls think? Is the dress just ugly? Unflattering? I think it's so adorable, but if I'm going to regret owning it in a few years I don't want to spend the money on it now. KWIM?
As long as you can size down from the 10 and have it more fitted (more like in the picture of the size 4), I say go for it, it's cute! It's true that this style of dress is never going to be as figure-flattering as a wrap dress or some other styles, but I think it's totally fun and adorable for the summer!
I am the dissenter on this one. I think you should stick with that gorgeous DVF you posted on the weekend shopping thread. You have a gorgeous hourglass shape and need some definition at the waist to take advantage and showcase it. The dress is cute but in my opinion, isn't even that flattering on the model.
I think the 10 looks good, but you could go down a size. An 8 would be perfect if you still want it loose. Standard grading is about an inch in the bust- do you think that would still be too small if you went up to the 6?

I think it's pretty cute - and for summer in LA it is really useful. On those blistering days a looser madras dress would be a godsend! If you are really concerned about the shape, maybe you could look for similar fabric, but in something with more of a defined waist?
Thanks for all your honest opinions. I feel like I've been searching for a cute madras dress for months but all the brands that make madras dress (like J. Crew), don't cut for my chest at all. I think it will be a great dress to go to farmer's markets in and such, especially with the nifty pockets.
lynnie, the 4 *barely* didn't zip up in the chest, but I had to forgo the bra to get the zipper up most of the way. I have a bra on in the size 10 pic, but there's enough room to stick a hand under the dress. The 8 would be the good 'loose' size, but I think I want the 6 if I can get it because I'd like this dress to hit above the knee.
I think I'm going to get it, but only if the DVF doesn't pan out (still haven't heard if Bloomie's has 'approved' the $117 price yet). I still don't *love* the $148 price tag (J. Crew's pricing is starting to kill me), but apparently a lot of other people do since I've had such a difficult time locating the dress just to try on.
Its not my style, but it sounds like something you have been wanting for a while. I would wear it loose casual days, then to spice things up, get a tan woven wide belt to add some definition to your waist.

I agree. We have similar body types, and that style of dress make me feel very stumpy. You look GREAT in more form fitting dresses.
