So all the wedding mags I've been reading say to send out save the dates 6-9 months in advance, but I feel like we should send them earlier since we are getting married on a holiday weekend (July 4th).  What do you think?

I'm assuming you mean July 4th of 2008?

I don't think you necessarily have to send them out sooner. Few people plan their July 4th weekends that far in advance, you know? Maybe err on the side of 9 months.

I agree with ttara. I'd send them out about 9 months in advance, since it is a holiday weekend.
