I usually use a wide tooth comb but my hairstylist suggested I start brushing my hair from my scalp down to distribute the oils, etc.
I started getting flakes because I don't brush my hair enough; I have thick curly hair so I don't like to brush it that often because it gets super frizzy but I guess I need to start stimulating my scalp!
My stylist just recommended this same thing for me (and I had read that it was something you should so as well) and she suggested this one, its the mason pearson pure bristle brush. I haven't ordered it so I can't vouch for it but the article I read recommended it as well.
I like Jean-Pierre brushes because they have natural boar bristle. The boar bristle is scaly rather than smooth in texture, which does a good job of distributing oils throughout hair.
Since you said you've got very curly hair though, his website says that it may be better to use a brush that's a blend of natural boar bristle and nylon since just pure boar bristle might be too soft to penetrate the curly hair. They have a special style called Mélange, that's a blend of natural and synthetic bristles that's supposed to be really good for curly hair.
The brushes are expensive but I think they're worth it because they last forever. HTH!
i have a mason pearson boar brush and i swear it really does help distribute oils. i brush before bedtime. i also feel that my hair looks neater and more polished when i brush.
i have two marilyn brushes. one a paddle brush and the other is a round brush. i really like both of them. a LOT of the stylists i work with use these brushes.
the other line that i hear good things about is the mason pierson brushes.

I agree. I have a Marilyn brush that I LOVE. I got mine at Ulta for less than $20.
I've had a Mason Pearson brush for over ten years and it is still in perfect condition. They are wonderful brushes and I can't recommend them highly enough!
