I noticed that many of you ladies are going back to school to make a career change in the poll on 2006/2007. That sparked my interest as to what everyone does for a living now and what they are going to go back to school to do.
I am currently the Assistant to the CEO and a Managing Partner of an IT Consulting firm. Before this gig I was an HR Manager. I am going back to school to get my Masters in Education to teach Secondary (including Middle School) English, Theatre and Film. I plan on teaching in Chicago Public Schools which should be a great challenge. At the same time I have a feeling that it will be very rewarding as well.

I am currently working for a large bank in Chicago as the Executive Assistant to the Chief Technology Officer. It pays the bills, but it's not very rewarding, so I've decided I really want to go back to school to become a Nurse. I know it's a lot of hard work, but I've been thinking about this for years and have several loved ones telling me they think it's my calling...and I'm passionate about helping others. Now I just have to sign up for classes!
good poll - i always wonder what everyone does! i'm not having a career change but anyway... i'm in my final year of uni training to be a physiotherapist.
I work for a university as a "sr. research technologist" doing data collection and reporting for the Dept. of Ed. Since we deal with a lot of census data and have a GIS dept, I'm taking grad coursework in GIS for a certificate, possibly a master's degree. I'll also probably take some grad coursework in applied statistics this year to learn SAS. I've used some other statistical software (SPSS), but SAS seems to be the preferred one for most of the jobs I've seen, as well as for my current job. Just some minor upgrades
I don't work now, but I was a cashier and before that an office assistant. Not what I want to do all my life! Currently my major is Human Services (Social Work), but I'm thinking about changing it to something else like business. I never know what I want to do!
I just finished six years in the Navy. I spent the first three years as an electronics technician and the last three as a paralegal/legal assistant. I have a bachelor's in business admin with an HR emphasis, but I'm not really interested in working in that field. I just wanted to finish school and business admin seemed like a safe choice.
I'm looking for work now and I've been focusing on assistant positions. I'm going to go back to school for Communications; I want to work in public relations or fundraising.
I currently work in Marketing Communications/Graphic Design. I like the intense design and writing part of my job, but I hate account management and event planning, so I want to rid myself of that with the next job I get.
With that in mind, I'm going to grad school for Publication and Integrated (Multi-Media) Design. My goal after completing the MFA program is to get a job as a Creative Director and eventually, I'd like to run my own marketing and design firm that specializes in arts, entertainment and fashion. There is also a possibility of completing a PhD in Communications Design directly after completing the MA/MFA program, but I'm not sure yet.
I went to school to be a journalist, ended up a teacher and am now getting my master's degree in English. I think I want to teach at the college level or do professional editing.

I'm a stay-at-home-mom. Have been for over six years now. I've known for years that I wanted to stay home once we had children, and my husband being in the Air Force has made it easier for me to do that, I think. Due to moving so much, there are a ton of SAHMs in the military. So, I have a lot of friends that are in the same boat as me. Before I had my oldest, though, I was the reservations manager at a Sheraton for years and had a brief stint in banking (commercial teller) to fill up a few months between moves. After the girls are older, I'd like to go back to the hospitality industry or something travel related. Who knows, though! That's a few years down the road!
I'm a lawyer. Boo. It's boring and unexciting (except when it's thrilling and very exciting but those moments are few and far between). I'd love to go to school and read books. I know that's not a career but oh! if it could...
I'm an "export coordinator/junior trader" but want desperately to get out of this industry. I'm not sure what direction I'm going next, but it will probably be policy analysis/political consulting/non-profit work. As you can see, I have no idea. But I want to figure it out before I go back to school!
My B.S. is in agronomy (crop science) and soils. After graduating I worked for USDA and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. I was a soil conservationist and worked with farmers to implement portions of the Farm Bill. I resigned in 2006 to come back to the farm where I grew up where my dad, uncle, and 2 cousins are farming as well. This year was my first crop and I absolutely it... Being self employed and working with my family is great, but it is major hard work.
However, there is a lot of new development going on around where I live. So I have decided to work this winter towards getting my professional soils classifier's license so that I can do soils evaluations and investigations that are required for new homes, business, etc. I have to make a soils map for 5000 acres and then take a test over taxonomy and soil properties. Hopefully by July of this year I will have the certification.
alagirl - that is so interesting, and so cool that you're into farming! I'm looking forward to watching farming becoming a major industry once again with increased demands for E85 and other plant based alt fuels.
Me, I am enrolled in the web school of hard knocks. I am redirecting my marketing career to focus more on web vs. traditional print and broadcast media.

I'm an attorney, but I don't really practice law in a traditional sense. I work for a hospital as the Risk Manager. The CEO introduced me as the "hospital attorney" a few weeks ago, and i really liked the way that sounded, unfortunately may salary does not reflect that.
The Risk Manager's position is usually held by an RN, or an RN and J.D. Not having a medical backgroun makes my job incredibly difficult, but I really like it. I do a lot of legal stuff and work with out outside counsel on malpractice claims, and I do a lot of safety stuff. I basically try to keep the hospital from being sued and try to keep our insurance premiums low. I'm a Department Manager so I get all the perks of management, but I'm the only member of my Dept. so I only have to worry about managing myself, which is plenty.
