On a typical first date- say dinner and drinks, nothing too fancy- what is your fool-proof date outfit?

pants? jeans? skirt? dress?

although it depends on the venue and weather, it's usually some derivation of jeans and a beater. i'm a very boring, get-a-beer-at-a-dive-bar kinda gal, though. i feel the most comfortable in jeans, and i think that comes through when i'm in 'new' situations.

ETA: i should also mention that i'm a recent college grad. so that, for lack of a better word, immaturity reflected in my clothing. and i very rarely got dressed up

In summer, casual, but flirty, full skirt and tight top. It looks feminine. Shows off my good points. And looks like I put an effort in without trying too hard. In winter, jeans and a tight tee for first date, mini with tights and boots for the second.

of course it depends on the venue, etc.... but I think my fool-proof outfit is a denim pencil skirt and my black wrap top - it's sexy without being in-your-face, and I think it can work in a variety of situations. In the summer I'd wear it with my pink kitten heel sandals, and in the winter with flats or boots.

My dear...are you leaving something out of the story? First date? Hmm?

Anyway...I wouldn't wear a skirt unless whomever the young fellow is has seen you in a skirt before- otherwise it might look like you are trying too hard or something. It might throw him off. The last thing you wanna do on a first date is confuse the boy.

I would wear jeans and a nice shirt or a cool t-shirt depending on where we are going. Nice shirt=real restaurant dining. T-shirt=drinks and dining at bar. The nice shirt would well, uh, show off the girls.

Actually...now that I'm really thinking about it, I have no effing clue what I would wear on a first date. So, I guess I'm not much help.

I would wear dark denim jeans, heels (boots or shoes no matter), a flirty top blouse of some sort. I may or may not add a blazer as well, depending on venue. I like to wear a thick wrap as a scarf so if it's fancier than expected you can drape it over shoulders, if casual you can just take it off with jacket.

I like to wear a nice pair of jeans, comfortable shoes and a somewhat cute top or sweater (but nothing very tight or low cut or that sort of thing). I focus on doing nice natural hair and makeup.

I actually tend to dress a bit more casually and less flirty on a first date than I do for normal circumstances because it makes me feel more comfortable and confident -- like I'm not trying too hard. Isn't that crazy?! And I feel like it gives me more of an ability to wear whatever I'd like for future dates -- more dressy/cute/flirty or not -- without freaking the guy out.

I know exactly what you mean. Even though it seems counter-intuitive, I don't ever wear my knock-out stuff on the first date. I try to wear something simple that I look nice in, without looking like I spent forever figuring out what to wear (even if I did).

I completely agree -

My foolproof is dark denim jeans, a satin cami or delicate blouse, with a blazer or cashmere cardigan layered over.  Of course heels and a clutch to top it off.  I feel like you're not too overdressed or underdressed, sexy or plain, its just right.
