I really want a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, but it's just not in the budget at this point. Being impatient, I decided to give it a try on my own. Please give me some honest opinions. This is all "flying by the seat of my pants." The "stones" are textured and hard, but they don't really stick out too much like real stones.
Damn!!! Did you paint those yourself? It looks great! I'm impressed.
I think the only suggestion I would have is that you *might* want to look at painting where the grout might be. A soft sand kind of color would look really natural. But that might be much more trouble than it's worth. And I honestly think it looks great as it is--it just depends on how much more work you want to put into it.
Well, since you asked for honest opinions...right now it sorta looks like a giraffe print. But that's just because the "grout" is white. If you do what NCshopper did and somehow paint that area then it would look amazing. The stones themselves look great...it's just the whiteness of the background. How hard would it be to get the "stones" off of the wall to just paint it all (sponge technique maybe?) tan?
Sorry...I know giraffe probably isn't what you wanted to hear.

i think it is a great idea, esp. if you are on a budget, but i agree w/NC and rel that the white throws everything off. i would try to make that a little more natural looking and then see what you think:) very nice work though
I normally do not go for faux finishes or anything fake looking, but honestly, I really didn't know that you painted those stones! They really look real on the screen. Awesome job!

Ha! That's what I thought, too! I have gone back on one wall and rubbed and antique glaze over the entire thing. The grout is now slightly grayish, and the stones are a little darker. I'll take some more pics for comparison.
