Umm....super weird news...menopause baby...
Permalink Closed

Like I said in my title, this is super weird for me and for my 20yr brother and 10yr old sis....but the day b4 my parents 25th wedding anniversary party, my mom found out she.....is pregnant...at 43 and my dad will be a new dad at 50 (gasp!).

We were kinda grossed out at the thought out my parents...you know.  My poor mom was entering the 1st stages of menopause and they took her off birth control and I guess she got preggers immediately.  She had been going to the doc almost every other week and they never once gave her a pregnancy test when she complained about headaches, etc.  She was also surprised cuz she had been spotting the entire 3 months.  They told her she most likely would miscarry as she was a high risk pregnancy, but here we are at over 5 months, and it looks like she will deliver in the spring.

She's been kind of down lately cuz they were done having kids and now she's starting all over again and dad & her had other plans in the future.  I was the 1st to know (after dad), but my bro & sis just found out this week!  I'm creeped out that I'm going to be the really OLD sister! When the baby is 26, I'll be 50!  And my daughter will be older than her aunt/uncle!  I'll be posting in the fashion board for tops suggestions.  She asked for empire waisted tops for xmas; nothing that screams "maternity".  She was preggers in the 80s, when maternity wasnt all that stylish.

wow that is crazy! My friend Jake was born when his dad was 76....so I guess anything's possible!

I'm sorry if this is stressing your mom out... that had to be really unexpected. You'll just have to offer to babysit a lot

My mother in law had my husband when she was 45, and his brothers are both as old as MY parents. So I totally understand the age gap thing :) However, I am sure this is going to be wonderful for your family - and just think now your mom might have more help too since you are all old enough to give her a break once in awhile.

Congrats :)

Wow, that would be weird, but in a good way.  Congrats to your mom!  And you'll be able to fill her in on all the new and improved baby stuff that's out there now

I can see why this would come as a shock to all of you.  But babies are miracles at any age.  Help her out as much as possible and try to enjoy this experience with her - she'll need all the help she can get!

i think its fantastic b/c i was a surprise baby too!  my oldest sister is 20 years older than me, then my brother at 19 years and my other sister at 17 years!

my nephew is only 3 years younger than me so we've always been close like bro & sis.

one thing i can advise you BQ is to definitely play a significant part in your new sister or brothers life b/c sometimes i feel really disconnected from my older siblings b/c they had moved out and had their owns lives before I was born.

congratulations to your family!!

Wow!   That must have been a shocker!  I probably would think my mom was joking if she told me she was pregnant!  Congratulations!  Should be lots of fun for the family!

This is weird, but also great. A very good friend of mine who is 43 just gave birth to twins and she is the best mother I know. I believe that our children's souls choose us as their parents; your mother must be really special. 43 is not old at all. I wish your family all the best!

I was a suprise baby too!  My mom was in her mid-forties.  My oldest brother is 22 years older than me, it goes from there until there's a 10 year gap between me and my brother just older than me.  I totally agree with what Bex said about playing a part in your new siblings life.  I feel distant from my older siblings at times and wish there was more of a relationship there. But that being said, i love it! Congrats!

I second this....my DH's brother is 9 years younger and he feels the same way...so I'm sure with more of an age gap it would feel like that. I know a few people who have had children in their 40's and did just fine. Just offer your mom lots of support...I'm sure it could be hard emotionally to deal with something like that. Congrats and best wishes!!

Wow.  Congrats to your mom.  I also agree witht the advice to be active in your sibling's life.  My mom was born when my grandmother was 40 and she said she feels more like an only child than the youngest of 3 becuase she was never close with her siblings.  They were out of the house before she was born.

My parents had me two months before their 20th wedding anniversary.  My mother was 7 months pregnant with me in my oldest sister's hs graduation picture.  My other sister is 16 years older than me.  My oldest sister has always been like a 2nd mother to me.  That is how you will be to your new sibling. I think it is going to be great!!!
