BSG girls, I need to discuss.

1. Adama + Roslin, stoned: too insanely cute for words.

2. Starbuck + Apollo sex: surprisingly un-sexy.

3. I was browsing the BSG forum on Television Without Pity, and there was a surprising amount of hate for Starbuck, and total lack of any comprehension or empathy regarding why she behaved how she did. Then again, probably most of the posters are men, and most men have the imagination and empathy of a shovel when it comes to things like this.

My take on it was that she's been dancing around this thing with Lee this whole time, wanting to be with him, but feeling like she's not good enough for it. She is almost tragically self-destructive... she doesn't believe that she deserves to be happy so she sabotages everything good that develops in her life. She's terrified of real intimacy of any kind, so when all of a sudden, there he is, this guy she loves, finally telling her he wants to be with her for real, literally screaming to the world that he loves her, she panics. He's urging her to cut Anders loose, but Anders is her security blanket--their relationship is about sex and companionship and she feels good with him, but still very guarded, because she hasn't had to share any of her crazy shit with him--she cares about him but the relationship is basically pretty superficial. I think she really did think she loved him, but when confronted with the actual possibility of being with Lee and what that might mean for her, I think she couldn't handle it. So of course she did the one thing that could push him as far away as she could possibly ever get him, so he'd never scare her like that again. I mean the look on her face when she woke up the morning after said it all--she looked happy, briefly, and then completely terrified.

I don't get why nobody else seemed to see that! If you pay enough attention to the series to post on a forum, you've got to know that Starbuck LOATHES herself... so why is it surprising that she'd send her chance at big scary happiness down in a spectacular burst of flame without even thinking about it?

May I say....You are the man! That is exactly right. I can totally see how guys wouldn't get it but I do. You said it so well - did you tell those guys that on the board?

I LOVED the boxing. I found that completely sexy - all of it - and I have no idea why.

I was really hoping Adama & Roslyn would get it on

ETA: Sorry for the lame response- I know you were looking to discuss- I will add more tomorrow while I'm bored & working. I want to discuss too.

Really???  Hmmm...I respectfully disagree.

But yes, there's a surprising amount of hate for Starbuck on the scifi.com boards too (I suppose TWoP would be a less nerdy place for me to hang out...must consider this...) and the episode in general.  "As the Galactica Turns" accusations and such.  I get that not everyone's into romantic storylines, but personally, I've always thought the show was *all about* the relationships.  Not the romantic relationships per se, but just the interpersonal interactions between the characters.  I mean, it's a drama, no?

Anyway, I totally agree with you and I get it too.  Maybe I'm just a screw-up as well, but her actions make sense, at least in the context of her character.  She either hurts people or they hurt her.  Better to hurt them first, right?  She obviously feels that she more or less killed the last man she was truly in love with...that's got to scare anyone, especially someone already messed up.  And then there's her mother...  So for Kara, getting close to people = bad, bad things.

And you know, after dying, just *dying* for those two to just frak already, I think I'd rather they just be friends.  Very flirty friends with enormous amounts of sexual tension, of course.

Oh yeah, and Adama and Roslin are adorable stoned on New Caprica pot.  Hmmmm...now that I think of it, maybe that's why Adama was so clueless the next day...killed too many brain cells the night before...

ETA just one more thing...how cute were the Fighting Agathons?

Well, obviously, I have to re-watch the sex scene at least nine more times, and probably it will get hotter.

And I totally agree about the relationship issue--I was thinking the same thing. I think the people who complain about that probably just want nothing but an hour of guns and spaceships. Also, the reason I am such a hardcore Star-pollo shipper is that the actors sold it to me so completely... I'm always baffled when people are like, "I don't see the chemistry with those two."

Am with you on the where-was-Adama question... I think he must have still been baked! He doesn't notice when he tells his son about Starbuck getting married and Lee almost vomits in front of him?

And yes, Fighting Agathons were insanely cute. I love them.

Also, I know I should feel bad for Dee but I just can't. Not cause I don't like the character, although I do feel that she's less interesting since becoming Mrs. Adama, but because their entire relationship just felt so phony and forced. Like, the writers had to do something to keep Starbuck and Apollo apart so they made him develop this random attachment to Dee. I never bought it. Her face at the end of this episode, though... oh man.

one more thing: went back to the TWOP forum to search for someone rational, and found a few. This post made me giggle, cause it's so true:

"Personally, I'm confused by the people that say they can't stand (for example) the Kara/Lee relationship because they're both annoying/idiotic/selfish/fracked in the head. I think I've agreed with every negative trait people have listed about these characters, but those negative traits are what make the characters interesting (at least to me). Who wants to watch a bunch of calm, balanced people apologize maturely to each other?"

I. Love. Roslin.   I love that she and Adama got stoned and discussed building a cabin in the woods and how she showed up at the boxing match and actually knew about fighting!

Re: Starbuck.  I think it was the episode where she was captured by the Cylons and taken to the "farm", but we found out she was abused as a child.  I think it was alluded to in some other eps as well.  I think that explains her self-loathing and serious trust issues.   I think Starbuck is a great character, I can see her and Tigh self-destructing together.  I think a lot of people on the scifi boards (very scary place, btw) don't like her because she is a masculine character.  What other female character on the show could you see getting into a boxing ring and kicking ass?

I don't think that Dee and Apollo are getting a divorce (unfortunately).  Though I wouldn't be surprised if Anders kicked Starbuck to the curb.  I felt far worse for Anders than I did for Dee.  I never liked her and Apollo together.

I definitely see the show as more of a drama than a scifi show.  So I like episodes that center around the relationships between the characters.  Though I was sad at the lack of Baltar in this ep.  I need my dose of crazy!

I agree with both these statements.  (Yeah, Baltar's role has been very small lately...they need to get him back with the fleet!)

Yes, Dee's certainly less interesting now.  I sort of always thought she took the son when she couldn't get the father...or on a similar vein, she's just power-hungry and wants to be Mrs. Someone Important.  Either way, I never got the Lee/Dee chemistry either, and beyond that, I've never felt that she genuinely loves Lee.  So I just can't feel sorry for her, but I do give the actress props for finally emoting.  That look on her face at the end has been the only sign that she really cares.

Another thought...everyone out there on the various boards seems to be painting Starbuck as the aggressor, this heartless bitch who just steals people's boyfriends for kicks, which is just odd.  I'm ignoring the fact that those two obviously had an intimate, if platonic, relationship already...regardless of that, she was clearly less sure of it all than Lee.  He brought her more drinks, he presumably agreed to (if not suggested) a walk in the woods away from everyone, he instigated the "are you sure this is what you want" discussion, he kissed her...and then it was his idea to "tell everyone."  She seemed hesitant, but he pushed.  Plus, before they declared their love for each other, he was all "let's accept it," as if having sex equals a long term committment.  Not to be jaded, but has he *met* Kara?  After she slept with Baltar (which was after Apollo didn't make his move, I might add), he got all pissy and said something to the effect of "This is just like old times, when you would get drunk and sleep with whoever."  Anyway, this is all a long-winded way of saying that I really don't see Starbuck as the aggressor here.  Yes, it takes two and no doubt she was willing, and yes, she did run off and marry another guy after the fact, but she didn't seem to be ready for all that Apollo wanted her to be, and she tried to say that before he bullied her into screaming her love for him.

Alright...I'll stop before I turn into an even bigger nerd.  But I gotta stick up for my girl.
