I saw that a while ago - it's still unbelievable, I think. I mean, I know that there's photoshopping and beatuy and hair teams, but I still didn't really believe there could be that drastic of a difference!

It's so sad that girls at such a young age are so focused on how they look.
That one was good, too. That girl who talked about hating her legs reminded me of myself. I remember when I first hated my thighs - I was probably only in 4th or 5th grade, and I rarely wore shorts. One day I did, and when I sat down I thought my thighs looked huge. I avoided shorts forever after that. I remember telling my mom that I thought my thighs were too fat, and she kept trying to tell me that it was just how legs look on everyone. It took me a while to figure that out for myself.

Thanks, NCshopper. The film you posted nearly made me cry. I am looking into the Self Esteem Fund and how I can get involved.
I have been beating myself up for years and years and years about my looks (or lack of!) and I'm not sure I can stop that now, but maybe I can help other girls from going through the same. Maybe that's wishful thinking, but I'm glad Dove is taking a stand.

I had a similar experience. I think I was a little bit older, but I remember looking at my legs in shorts when I was sitting down and thinking, "Well, I guess I won't be wearing shorts again!"
The part of that film that really hit home for me was when that girl said someone called her ugly. I wanted to yell at the computer and tell her she sooo wasn't ugly and that the boy that called her that is just nothing.
I really like what Dove is doing with this. I'd like to look into it more too. Thanks again, atlgirl for making me aware of it.
Thanks for posting this. Although there's been a lot of improvement in expanding the standard of beauty in the past 50 years, we still have a loooooooong way to go. I was a camp counselor this summer and one of my 13 year old girls wouldn't eat anything because she thought she was fat (and this girl was tiny). I was very blessed to grow up in a family where I was encouraged and uplifted but I know many girls whose moms would constantly tell them they needed to work out or go on diets.

When I was little I was really conscious of my body too. In 4th grade there was this one boy all the girls were swooning over, and one of my friends (who was in 3rd grade) accused me of "shaking" my butt when I walked to get his attention. Although I was not fat, I wasn't as skinny as most of the girls and my body devloped early. I had a booty in 4th grade. That was just the way I walked.
To this day I still remember bawling my eyes out when I got home from school because I had a big butt. It's amazing how much a comment about one's body, even at such a young age, can be really upsetting. Kids shouldn't be thinking about stuff like that, they should be learning and having fun.
