Sorry to be so gross but I need some female advice. I've never had one before but I think I have a yeast infection. What should I do about it? There are so many over-the-counter medicines and creams that I have no clue where to even start. I'll probably start my period in a few days too. Will this irritate it? Help please
if you've never had one before, it's probably a better idea to go to the doctor, just to be sure it's that and not something else. but if you've read symptoms online and you're pretty sure that's what it is, creams you can buy at the drugstore will probably not hurt, but they're pretty gross and docs can prescribe a pill instead.
also, having your period shouldn't irritate it more, in fact, it might actually make it go away because your period alters the acidic/bacterial balance down there...but it will probably be back.
here's a few links that are pretty good for more info -
Tea tree oil suppositories are the best thing for me - you can buy them at health food stores. The creams don't work for me all that well. It always just comes back. I've also found that eating less sugar, putting sea salt in my bath, wearing cotton underwear, and hmmm... maybe I'm more paranoid about these than I realized. I hate them!
I know you're supposed to go to the doctor the first time you have one (or think you have one), and that probably is the best advice..but I just use the over the counter things and it goes away in like one day. I hate doctors.
A doctor can also write you a perscription for a pill you can take that always works better for me than the over-the-counter stuff. Don't be embarressed it's just one of the many "joys" of being a woman...the sooner you treat it the better.
i just wanted to chime in to say, if you get something over the counter, i would not go with a one day treatment. i have found they don't work as well, and then your body get's used to the one day treatment and that is all you will be able to use. the 3 day treatments work great and are not that prolonged. also, if you decide to go to your doctor or clinic and get a pill, just wanted to add that your body will also get used to that and over the counter treatments and creams will not work anymore either.
Definately go to the doctor if this is your first yeast infection, just to be sure. I highly reccommend the pill, Diflucan, as it is easy and, I have found, effective. The OTC treatments are just too messy for me, though I do think they are just as effective.
Sounds kind of gross but (I've had some serious yeast infections before and I've tried everything) all natural yogurt works best for me. I'm not kidding. You can insert a small amount with a tampon applicator thing and usually everything clears up in a day or so. I just do it once a day. And just for an fyi, I didn't make it up. I read up on all the natural ways to fight yeast infections since I was sick of doing the 7-day cream otc (the only thing that worked for me).
Diflucan works also but I only use it when I go on antibiotics or something so my body doesn't get too used to it.
If your period is about to start, you might want to just wait. Maybe buy some external cream for the discomfort and see if it goes away after your period. If I ever have any symptoms near my period, I don't medicate and wait for my period to do its work, which has worked so far.
Oh and yeast infections are totally not embarassing. Everyone gets them and they suck. Boo.

I've done the yogurt/tampon thing as well, on a couple different occasions, and it has always worked out well. Just make sure to use the plain plain stuff...not the strawberry fruit on the bottom!
