Mashed potatoe recipe?
Permalink Closed

Does anyone have a good mashed potatoes recipe? I had these amazing cream cheese mashed p's the other night, and they were so delcious! The one time I actually tried to make my own mp's though, they were awful - very flavorless, which is why I usually stick to the flakes. If anyone has any goofproof recipes, please post. TIA!

I recommend using Yukon Gold potatoes, and instead of cutting them into small pieces to cook faster, just peel and cut in 1/2 or 1/4 (other wise they seem to absorb too much water or something) then mash in mixer with milk, butter, salt and pepper. Some people use broth to flavor them, and sometime garlic helps. I've never cared for ones made with sour cream.

I do mine like greendiamond. I have used broth or garlic to flavor in the past. but to be honest my favs are when i boil them, drain, then put in a stick of butter & a little milk then blend with my mixer. Sounds like gd & I are making the same taters! I leave it up to the individual to put cheese, bacon, or sour cream on the top - I just think it makes for better consistency of the mashed potatoes.

PS- I didn't even know that flakes existed until i got to college & had a roommate! Guess I was spoiled.

Thaks all! I'll try out both Christine's version and greendiamond and laken's version. :)

Here's one more...it's my favorite and so simple

Cube your potatoes, leave the skin on...more flavor!
Boil in complete chicken broth, no water at all...potatoes are super absorbant, water can make them too bland
I like to let mine boil until the both is almost completely gone, so much that you don't have to drain them..it takes a while, but definitely worth it...
I like to use a potato masher instead of my mixer, I like to have a little bit of texture
Finally, just like laken and greendiamond, I use milk, butter, salt and pepper to season with...and sometimes a little bit of season all...

mmmm...now i'm hungry for home cooking....just need some fried chicken to go with it!!!

what are flakes?

Thanks Jahni! Flakes are potatoe flakes - you add water to them. Basically, instant mashed potatoes.

I never tried the flakes until college either. My mom always likened them to wall paper paste. And, after being raised on real mashed potatoes, I can understand the comparison. However, Costco sells some instant mashed potatoes in a blue box that has individual bags inside, and they are yummy. You can make it really liquidy and make them into potato soup. I haven't tried that with the Idahoan flakes though.
