Poster dot and I went to PR in August a few years ago. It was really hot and humid but we pretty much just spent all our time in the pool or on the beach so we didn't really feel it. We stayed at the Wyndam El San Juan which is a bit outside San Juan. It was a big resort so it was really relaxing and we could take a bus or taxi into Old San Juan easily. We went for 4 nights and the flights and hotel room came to $1300 for both of us. I'm sure you could find something for $1000 though.

thanks for the tip, cc. i think i'm going to book PR tonight - i'm debating b/t the normandie hotel (which is a boutique hotel) or the radisson (which has a casino) both in the condado area. i know this is a long shot - but do you remember seeing either one of these?

Hope this isn't too late. I definitely recognize the Normandie but I can't remember if it is just from the research we did when booking our trip or if I actually saw it in person.
So I'm not any help at all. I will say that dot and I considered Old San Juan and Condado but wound up going further outside San Juan to the Isla Verde area because we wanted something that was actually on the beach and which had a lot of beachfront space. Not sure if that is a priority for you though.

thanks so much for your help, cc! i actually booked a hotel in the isla verde area b/c after so much research, it seemed like it had the prettiest beach area. i'm excited to go - except for all the rain that i'm in for. thanks again!
