Does anyone know anything about ripping up carpets over hardwood flooring?

We found a really great house to rent, and the only thing I don't like it is this hideous blue carpet in the living room.  Not only is it ugly, but it is really trashed (stained, burn holes around the fireplace, etc).  The rest of the house is hardwood and the landlord told us that there is hardwood under the carpet, but she doesn't know how bad it looks.  No matter how bad it is, it can't be uglier than the carpet.  She's fine w/ us ripping out the carpet, so we'd like to give that a try.

Any tips on getting the carpet up and dealing w/ the floor underneath?

My boyfriend and I recently ripped up the carpet that was covering hardwood floors at our place. For us, it was a 2-part job. We had to pull the carpet up first. It was stapled into the floor in many spots, and it was sometimes hard to pull out. Sometimes the staples will want to remain in the wood, so you will need a pair of pliers to pull out the stubborn ones.

Then, we had to pull up the carpet padding. This was also stapled into the floor and we also used the pliers a lot.

It's kind of a rough job on your hands so you might want to wear work gloves.

We discovered that the hardwood underneath was in great condition. You can see some tiny black dots which are actually holes where the staples were, but they're not very noticeable at all.

If the hardwood underneath has some holes in it, where tiny bits of wood have splintered away, you can buy this special filler at a hardware store that looks like wood, and fill in the holes. It's really easy.

If the floor is badly scratched, or has stains, fixing it will involve sanding it down, re-staining it, and sealing it again. You could take this on yourself but you might want to hire a professional, because they have big sanding machines to make it go a lot faster. HTH!

Christine, thanks!  That is really helpful.  I guess we'll just go for it.  Even if the wood is stained, it honestly cannot look any worse than the carpet.

My parents had to do the same thing since the floor was in bad condition. My dad did it himself since my sister's husband had all the equipment.
