awkward money situation with friends...
Permalink Closed

I have 2 problems i need some advice on

1. My "friend" never really has any cash with her. We happened to be hanging out oneday and she asks for $20 so that she could deposit into her debit account or else it will be closed. I gave her $20. This was probably in Feb. I HATe asking for money back, i always jsut expect people to remmeber because it jsut seems to be the right thing to do. But she never did. I havent seen her since that time. ( I lent her money before; $30 to buy a jacket at H&M. It took her 2 months to pay me back.) I texted her a month ago but she never text me back or called me. Im probably being cheap but it bothers me. And she still has my sunglasses that she borrowed last year!! True, they are my cheap ones but I bought those for the purpose of travel when I dont want to bring my gucci's for fear of losing them. I need those back too! What should I say? Should i just forget about it because its been so long?

2. My other friend who I am pretty close to when I am at school asked me to help her dye her hair black. She has issues with her roomate so she didnt want to do it in her room so I dyed her hair in my room. After I was done dying I discovred that I might have dripped alittle onto the carpet. I remmeber saying that iwas afraid that i will get charged for the stain, she said that she would pay for it if anything.
Of course I got charged $50 for the stain which is split with my roomate. I dont know if i should ask her to pay for it or at least for part of it. What should I say? I hate asking people for money, i find it soo awkward and rude. Should i just let it slide?

Sorry for the long post, thanks for any advice!

I would ask #1 for the sunglasses and $$ in a phone call. Tell her you need the glasses and cash cause you are traveling or whatever...give her a deadline too and then NEVER do it again.

#2, ask her to pay the $50, it was her hair or split it with her since you had a hand in the drip.

I think girl#1 is still in school for summer classes so I dont know if i would be able to see her. But ill call and ask anyway, if i dont iknow it will keep bothering me.
As for girl #2, I dont know if my roomate would want me to pay for her share also since it wasnt her fault. That would make that cost of the stain $100. If I ask my friend to pay 25 then that is jsut half of my part, or should I just have her pay 50 so that I could just pay for my roomates bill. Sorry for more questions...thanks

I agree, ask number 1 (who sounds like a mooch) for the money and sunglasses back, and then don't lend her anything again. It sucks to discover a friend has those kinds of issues, but she sounds like the kind of person who will just take and take from people (literally) and that's not fair to you.

Number 2 sounds like she would want to pay for the stain, since she offered, so I would just let her know that you did end up getting fined for it. You did her a favor with helping her out anyway and she seems to be a considerate friend, so I don't think she would be upset. If I were in the situation, I would pay for my room mate's share since it wasn't her fault.

HTH!

#1 sounds like a really shady friend. If she's not even returning your calls regarding the money, I really don't even think you should bother continuing the friendship with her. Just cut your losses and move on. I personally don't think you should even have to ASK friends to pay you back or do whats right.

#2 ask her to pay for the whole thing..if she offered, she should follow up on that.

Call Friend #1 and ask her for the money and the sunglasses. Be bitchy if you have to. Maybe she just forgot.. or maybe she is hoping you forget. Either way, she needs to understand that the things she has taken from you are borrowed.. NOT gifts.

As for Friend #2. Call her and tell her that she needs to give to $50 to pay your roommates portion of the charge. You should pay the other $50 since you were present when the hair dye spilled.

it's awkward, but you have gotta just break the mold/rip off the band aid... :)  Ask them both for the money, kindly of course, but no need to feel guilt or to apologize for asking.

I called girl #1 she didnt pick up. I texted her she didnt respond. Im not sure if shes ignoring me or just changed her number. I was complaining to my friend and he said that I probably wont be able to find her next semester on campus beause she got kicked out of school. My friend however is going to campus in a few weeks and offered to go ask for my stuff back.

I will see girl#2 in a few days and will ask for the money then. When I see my roomate in the fall I will tell her about the charges(she is in korea for the summer). The only reason I wasnt sure if i should pay her half is becasue she also dyed her hair just before school ended and made a few stains as well i guess not as big of a spot as mine. Yes we are messy people.

Anyway, thanks for all the advice. I appreciate it. I feel less guilty now about asking for my stuff back.

I'd just write off girl #1 & consider it a lesson learned. Don't lend money or your stuff to "friends" - it never works out. If someone asks you - tell them you were burned once & ever since you have a policy not to lend to friends. And it's totally true now! Sorry, that sucks, but at least it was $20 & not $200. You aren't being petty or cheap either - it's inconsiderate of her to not pay you back but she sounds like a total flake. Now you know.
