I think she would have had more people listening if she would have came out singing about Nick than ripping off Madonna! I don't like it.
I really really REALLY don't want to sound like I'm defending Jessica because I'm not her biggest fan but I think that going super-fluff was one of her better options. Nick was the first out of the gate with the "woe is me" album deal so an attempt by Jessica to do the same would have most likely come across as trite. Also, I think the public perception is to sympathize with Nick and hate on Jessica. Jessica has to avoid the comparison and go for something different.
The video is also getting a ton of hype with celeb cameos all over the place.
OK AND I'm trying to justify to everyone that I actually kinda like this song. (I hope you all still like me!) It's nowhere near as good as the real thing (I live and die by the Like A Prayer album, one of the best female pop albums ever) but it is very different from about 95% of what's on pop radio (or at least what I hear, but I'm really expecting my local pop station to go Spanish reggaeton any day now)...it's pure pop fluff.
I have not liked Joe Simpson since maybe 2004, but he's a VERY good gauge of the public's tastes and he knows how to work his daughters (oh that sounds soooooo wrong though!!!!! )
ETA: BF thinks the song is more general 80s Madonnaish...I think it sounds a little more like Dress You Up without the fast beat rather than Holiday.
I definitely have a softness for good fluffy pop music (ahem, I saw N*SYNC in concert once) but I don't like this. Granted, I have never liked her singing style or voice so I haven't liked her music in the past either.
Even my BF thinks this sounds just like "Holiday" and he volunteered this without me saying anything.
eta: Lilykind, I am sure everyone still loves you!
That song is just awful. I heard it on the radio the other day and thought that they were doing some sort of 80's throwback hour with a song I had never heard. Yikes.
Maybe Jess should just go back to acting. Oh wait...NO!
Okay, I'm with Lilykind. I actually like the song. I've never been a JS fan, so there's no bias here. I just love pop music. Not the crap that's on top-40 radio but actual pop music and I love the early 80s pop sound. So I like the song. And I think she's a good singer. Her voice isn't over produced (like Britney and most teeny bopper singers) and I love the Madonnish feel.
So if you must, hate me too but I give a thumbs up to the new single.
I recently saw a clip of an interview with her & she said something like "everyone has heard the story & the sad song, now what am I supposed to say?" - I thought it was mean & bitchy & I was hoping it was taken out of context. I can't even bother to listen to that song - that's how much she grates my nerves right now. I can't explain why I feel that strongly about it because it's none of my business, but I do!

Yes - I heard it on the radio last week too. and I am a JS fan - actually went to her concert - and her voice is amazing. But songs like this do nothing for her vocal capabilites, it's just all too breathy and pop (which I love PO) but not suitable for her. Hope the rest of the CD has some good ballads.
Also, agree with Lilykind - it was the high road to take to release this first song that has nothing to do with nick and his constant tearjearker- woe is me angle. IMHO
